dwarf seahorse

About five years ago I used CCritters and I had a good experience. They arrived healthy, had two pregnant males and they gave birth within 2 days. Sadly I was too new to the hobby to properly care for them and the crash of the tank was in no way CCritters fault. Bluntly I was a friggin idiot.

I have to agree with rayjay though, captive bred would be best as far as disease risk and it's in the best interest of the wild Hippocampus zosterae population. Personally if CCritters were captive breeders I'd definitely use them again but now that I'm more aware and (hopefully) a better hobbyist I'd go with someone else who does only captive bred. I don't recall where, I think it may have been in a science journal, but I read an article talking about how over harvesting of the dwarf seahorse was becoming a serious problem. Just some food for thought.

"Hello, Well im not the best guy to ask i never set up a tank for them.. I have read few books on it and your set up sound right on."

How can a dealer supply a healthy specimen if they have never set up a tank for them? The prices lured me in, but I refuse to purchase from someone who doesn't know how to care for the animals they sale... Just my .02 cents

Was this Dana Cramer from ccritters.com that said this? When I bought from them I was given a ton of info upon request from the seller about his own personal set up and he even states on his website that he has H. Zostarae in a tank with pipefish. Maybe someone else is in charge of sales now, but at the time that I bought I was pretty confident he was a keeper/seller.

It was him. I have never dealt with them personally so the email sent turned me away. It could have been a misunderstanding in the email, but that is the exact quote he sent me. Upon reading more on this, he is a very highly recommended seller. Not trying to hurt business, just sharing my experience. He did supply information in another email, he just said from what he has read. Correct me if I am wrong. Again, I do not want to hurt a business if they are worth dealing with.

No, no no didn't mean to imply anything :) That's odd but maybe he's considering his "for sale" tank just that and not a set up. I'd think even if he doesn't have a DT style tank but more of a functional he'd still have some useful info even at that. In any case they were great to me a while back but I agree its scary to buy from someone who doesn't know what they're doing and I wouldn't have if that were the response I had gotten back then.

Thanks for sharing a positive experience. Did you ever order from them? I am very open to giving them a chance. Their prices are very good, and I do agree that captive specimens are the way to go, but I'm a broke college student who does not want to drop $75 for a pair of them.

I did end up ordering back in...2008 I think it was. And everything was excellent. They weren't sluggish at all out of the bag and started eating about an hour after introduction to the tank. A few days later the pregnant male gave birth to healthy fry. Sadly I crashed my tank because I was too inexperienced but my experience with the seller was great.
