yeah, I'm getting a little tired of doing water changes and worst of all i'm having a hard time with crap floating to the top(or staying at the surface of the water) if anybody has any ideas please feel free to Show me the way
This link shows what has to be the simplest, cheapest diy skimmer I've seen.
If you're not using an overflow, which it sounds like your not since you're complaining about surface gunk, you can build a much simpler version of this. Just make only one half of it, probably out of 3/4" pvc, and use some bushings to get the tank end up to a size where you can put a 3"x2" reducer on it. The 3" side of the reducer sticks up and acts like an overflow box.
Like this:
Put the skimmer in a 5 gal bucket with a powerhead and some flexible tubing to pump the skimmed water back into the tank.
