early sex

I was amazed to see how fast juvenile peppermint shrimps grow after metamorphosis. And larval development of Lysmata is slow, taking 30-45 days for peppermints but 3-4 months for the cleaners.
But even more amazing was to find one of these juveniles already carrying eggs today,21 days after settling!.The larger are about 1/3-1/2 adult size.
And they are said to have had a previous male phase before their ovaries develop!.Precocious sexual development indeed!:eek1:

That trend is not seen in the wild, its a lab effect. Don't you wish you could pill them in a tank at high densities and get the same results.
