easy anemone

i have 2 months experience. i have a 29 gallon tank. i have never had any problems. i have been pretty successful, i think. i have plenty of corals and rock and snails... etc . i have two clown fish and i think they have been trying to host my frogspawn. they have been unsuccessful, i conclude this by them not being in it accompanied by dark spots where the frogspawn has stung them. i was wondering what anemone i could put in my tank if any. i was told they are for experts, not me, and i should not try to have an anemone. i would like to provide a happy home for my clowns, does anyone have some suggestions of an anemone for a beginner. my lighting is two 36 watts lights. thanks

I'm gonna say that you don't have enough lighting to keep an anemone. The hardiest of all that you might want to look into if you get stronger lighting would be the BTA (Bubble Tip Anemone). Most people keep their anemones under T5 or metal halide lighting.

I'm no expert, but I would suggest on a 29 gallon tank to have at least 150 watts on it.

I don't believe two months experience in this hobby is long enough to try an anemone. I agree with the above post, you do not have enough lighting.

You can try a Condy Anemone

They don't require as much light as others, and they are cheaper...

oh yah, I do also agree that a 2month old tank might be still to new to provide a good home to any anemone... in a perfect world you should wait till month 6 atelast... but I didn't wait and my is still alive

Although condies are cheaper, they're not natural hosts for any clowns. Condies are harvested from the Atlantic where there are no clowns. It is very possible that the condy will accept the clowns, but there's a greater chance that the condy will eat the clowns after accepting them, like while they're sleeping.

With some patience and upgrades (lighting) you should be able to try your hand at a bta. It looks like you're off to a good start with frog spawn. The clowns don't need an anemone to be happy, but it is a really neat relationship to watch. They'll be fine for another 4 months or so.

The Anemone/clownfish FAQ near the top of this forum is very helpful.

I used my wait time on our most recent tank to further research the nem I wanted, to ask questions, and to work at providing the type of environment the nem will like. We'll be adding a bta shortly I hope.

Not always. Condy anemones do require stronger lighting than you would think in some cases.

Next week it was shriveled and almost disappeared!!! Stayed this size for a week and lost its stickyness

Upgraded to T5s and started to comeback after one week

I eventually sold it back to the lfs I had so I could get my blue carpet anemone. Based on the pictures, my Condy did fine for a while under PCs with additional feedings about 2-4 times a week. Overtime, it started to shrink and became really small and looked sick. When I upgraded to T5s, it came back and got much bigger. I never took the final pictures of it when right before I sold it but it was 3 times as big as the last two pictures under the new T5s. I

So my point is some Condy anemones can live under lower lighting but there are some that have higher needs. Maybe its genetics like with how some BTAs bubble and others don't. Maybe my condy was harvested in shallow waters where it got intense light. Who knows.

PONCHDOG2000, definately a no to getting any anemone right now. You don't quite have the experience ( I didn't when I first got my Condy), your tank is fairly new and unestablished and you have inaquedate lighting. Give your tank more time to establish itself and then upgrade your lighting. I would go with T5s. Patience is a virtue.
