ebay lights?

that's a nice looking tank, what size is it?

110g (48"x18"x30"). Actually, I wish it were 6" shallower and and 6" wider. The depth makes it a little difficult to aquascape/work on.

really nice shots abulgin, i love the look of it, i like the fact it is clean and crisp looking but also it looks aged, which imo makes a tank look better, like the side shot as well, im hoping my father in law gord will get some of mine sunday when he comes to lunch, im not into photograpy myself but feel the need to get some pics, not just for sharing but for my own benefit, this particular tank im running now is about 7-8 months old and even though short of corals is starting to look good, not quite like yours but close, you have anice tank though thanks for sharing your pics, great tank thanks again

I have bought lights from ebay by Catalina aquatics and was very happy. I have used thier mh and ho t5 with no problems. Beware some people have complained about thier customer service but I had no problems personally.

Just wanted to say something here... I think that only the people who have actually tried the fixtures, should be able to give opinions, but since I know that will never happen I will just give mine.

If you have all the money in the world to spend, then why not go ahead and buy the "get what you pay for" fixtures... If you do not, and would like to save some money by buying a fixture that does not have the "name" price attached... I think that the Catalina fixtures are highly moddable, especially the retro fit systems.

I bought a Catalina 8 x 54 watt fixture, and it was very nice like it was... It allowed me to go ahead and have some nice lights, until the time that I could be able to put a little extra into the unit... If you get Catalina's lights then you get bulbs and all... You cant beat that

So, after about a year I decided to replace reflectors and bulbs a little at a time... Here are some pictures of my results

6" below the bulbs

This reading is 6" below the water's surface, and taken from the middle of the right half of my tank

This is 12" below the surface, just under the one above

This one is still @ the sandbed, but a little bit over to the left from the one above

My tank is 30" tall, and I can keep clams on the sand if I want to, so I don't know too much about the "get what you pay for" theory

I think people have adopted the "golf course mentality" please allow me to explain. For decades the words golf, exclusive, and wealthy all went together like a 57 chevy having dice on the mirror. For years the only people who were setting up these tanks were the wealthy, the informed yet they would take on the attitude " you wouldnt understand now tell me how beautiful my tank is (uber stuck ups i like to call them). At the same time the "other people" myself included stood in awe of these systems and said "one day I'll have one of those" So what did we do, we got ingenuitive we built our own stands, tanks, sumps, elecrtical systems, plumbing, etc. etc. etc. So what is this rant all about. Everyone who wants to play golf can, and anyone who wants a saltwater tank can now afford to buy them. So i say to the masses buy the cheap lights because I gurantee those responsible for making and selling them are true aquariusts at heart, and trust me if they wanted to make their fixtures 700 dollars and up they would (lmao I bet if they were 900 bucks everyone would say these lights were the best ever made) they simply are in the business to help the everyday man enjoy the hobby.

I got an idea for this thread
first word is the expensive thing, the second is the cheaper alternative that works just as great

Ferrari ---- Corvette
Honda ---- Daewoo
Crown Royal ---- Jack Daniels
Wife ---- Boat

do you have a canopy if so you can by retrofit as others have talked about for close to the money your talking about spending.

i have bought alot of items from hellolights..
i bought a t5 setup fro 99 and that included the individual reflectors ballast and bulbs...
then you go with individual reflectors for the mhs..
icecap ballast and choose the bulbs you want.. im loving my phoenix 14k

Since when and why??

Forever, and because of people shilling their own auctions. We have no way of knowing if it's theirs.

Ok .. . fair enough, but I've seen hundreds of links to eBay items on here in my 1 plus year here. I think linking is helpful to others, but I understand the concern about selling. What's the differece, though, between posting a link and posting a eBay item number? I've benefitted a lot from people pointing me to items . .

Actually, I'm not sure that posting ebay links falls squarely within the prohibition contained in the Terms.

The Terms provide, in relevant part, as follows: "COMMERCIAL POSTING: . . . All other posts or signatures that are deemed to be commercial in nature are a violation of this user agreement and will be removed. As it pertains to the User Agreement, Reef Central defines “commercial post” as knowing and willful posts made by private individuals or businesses, directly or indirectly seeking commerce. Additionally, posts made by individuals or businesses in regard to other commercial activities, in anticipation of direct or indirect economic benefit or relief from the subject activity, will generally be regarded as “commercial.” Recognizing that it is impossible to construct a definition which will satisfy every situation or circumstance, Reef Central reserves the right to determine whether or not a post violates the “intent” of the “commercial post” policy or definition. Violation of this policy will be grounds for removal from our community."

An eBay link posted by a user under the circumstances above in response to someone looking for a particular piece of equipment is not necessarily made for the purpose of seeking commerce. Moreover, it is not necessarily made in anticipation of direct or indirect economic benefit or relief. Rather, only where the poster is affiliated with/selling the product offered would the Terms prohibit the post. While RC clearly has the right to determine whether a particular post is "commercial", it seems to me that the Terms require that this determination be made on a case-by-case basis rather than pursuant to a sweeping "no eBay links" policy. It seems to me that, if you want to prohibit eBay links, the Terms should be modified to say so.

Of course, it's your Board, it's private, and you can do anything you want, so my $0.02 are pretty much worth $0.00!

Catalina aquatics?

Catalina aquatics?

In one of the posts someone referenced "Catalina aquatics". I googled and tried Catalinaaquatics.com, but have had no luck. Can anyone help me find their website or ebay store? Also what ballast and bulbs do they supply with their light fixtures?

Thanks,

Eric

i found my lights on ebay, the guys direct address is aquascapesofla.com, im im still really new to the hobby but i am satisfied with them, this guy is a hobbiest selling them out of his garage, i know on his personal tank he runs 4 of the 36" t5 only lights and his tank is beautifull, the only complaint i have is that there is only one power cord and 3 switches so no timer run dawn and dusk simulation, but for the 50% i saved im not going to complaine, btw the t5 only fixtures are individual reflectors
