I just bought 100lbs of live rock off ebay for $309 and thats with shipping. The company has excellent feedback and seemed very friendly. I will let you know what I get when it comes in.

....
How long shold the initial cycle take, 3-5 weeks like a fish only or less due to bacteria already in the rock? [/B]
They will probably be happy to tell you more about their rock if you ask about your specific tank parameters.

Here is what they say in general terms: "Once the weeds, mud & sponge have been cleaned from the rock we then put it in our saltwater holding vats for a minimal of two weeks before the rock is ready to ship, So we do most of the dirty work for you before you receive it.

When the rock is ready it is carefully selected placed in a plastic bag and sealed to keep the rock moist in transit then packed into our box. We do all this to keep the rock as fresh as possible when you receive it.

PLEASE NOTE: This rock is best in tanks that are starting up with no livestock in them yet. Although they are cured rock, after shipping you could get an ammonia spike in your tank from the transport. I always recommend if you have an established system to soak the rock in a large rubbermaid with saltwater and a powerhead for a day or two...just to be sure! "

While I did not buy my rock from them, I was very satisfied with my LR/LS ebay transactions.

You WILL get an ammonia spike as the rock does experience some die-off, but it only lasted for about a week.

Well my tank is starting fresh, completely. I drained every bit of water, bought RO, replaced some hoses, cleaned the sump. So this rock will be going into a new system with no live stock. I was just wondering how long it will be before I can get my fish back and put into the tank. No problem though, I will just keep testing until everthing is cool.

Just geting stated myself so I am very interested in your thoughts on the quality of hte rock you recieve

Did you shop around the local guys to compare prices and quality sure seems like it would be simpler to just drive out and pick the pieces out you need in person

sure, if you want to spend 2-3 times as much.
Sometimes spending two or three times as much is a savings. If you can pick exactly the rocks that are the shape and size you want for where you want them... look to see how many Aiptasia, pest algae, pistol shrimp and nasty crabs you will have to deal with, and worry less about the transit dieoff and resulting ammonia spike, and othe advantages of finding a local source that I'm sure I skipped but others will point out, well then a bargain is not one when you pay less, but get less value, and end up with costly problems you have to solve. OTOH, I'd be glad to get some of the cool live rock we used to see in this hobby back in the 80's, locally or shipped.

Die off isnt an issue considering its a fresh tank, to their credit they even say to not put the rock in an established tank. They also have tons of positive feedback, not one negative in the past 12 months. No local store around here can say that (with maybe the exception of salty critters, ive always heard positive things about them). Last time I bought live rock local I did get to pick the rocks I wanted but couldnt see what hitchikers were in the rock, and of course there were some I didnt want. So for $3.00 a pound I'm giving it a try. After all, its rock.

please be sure to post a reply once you get the rock and let us know what condition it arrived in and your overall satisaction level

Just an update on some rock I bought on ebay. I bought 45#s of figi rock from liveaquaria 2 weeks ago and 75#s of the same from a seller called lifeoceanic. The liveaquaria rock worked out to be $3.40 a lb with shipping and the ebay rock was $3.14 shipped. The liveaquaria rock had alot more mud on it than the rock from ebay, which pretty much had none on it.

The rock has been in my tank for 2 weeks now and the ebay rock is already showing signs of coralline growth and none yet on the liveaquaria rock.

So, I would have no problem buying from this seller again. It`s no Tonga branch, but it`s nice rock.

I also asked for some bigger peices and most of the peices were around 10 to 14 inches.

I am very happy with my rock. Mine didnt come covered with corraline but has enough to for a good start. My tank was completely fresh r/o water with reef crystals salt and cycled in exactly one week. I know have livestock and coral in the tank with no issues at all, everything is happy. My rock did have some sponges on it that survived shipping. Almost always perfect size of rock too, no complaints at all.

I'm almost positive that this is the same Seller as I used over a year ago. The rock was just super and still is. I told them the size of my tank and asked them to hand pick a variety of sizes and it arrived fresh and clean smelling with a very short curing time.
