how are the ebay ro/di units? they seem super cheap, around $100 for a full unit.

i'll start grabbing some links to show what im interested in.

I would not trust them. I would go with a bulkreefsupply one they are around 130 and you know you are gettting good stuff. Also with a real company that you can pick up the phone and call. Good luck getting help from an ebay seller.
Not worth it. When you go cheap thats what you get in this hobby.
Spend the extra 40 bucks bud.

I went ebay with a 6 stage got it for 70 new. All i have to say is it put out 0 on tds meter. When it came time for new filters for it i went with the same seller and got those dirt cheap too....

+1 on Bulk Reef Supply. I tend to avoid ebay stuff, especially if it's from China or overseas (although not in your case). BRS, I know I can trust, and there are warranties.

Really don't care for the horizontal DI chambers -- will allow for channeling, and not nearly as effective as a vertical one. In addition the RO membrane would appear to be a no name one -- and it is a 100 GPD one, which usually have a 90% rejection rate. As opposed to a 75 GPD Dow Filmtec which has a 96-98% rejection rate.

Sure this unit will give you 0 TDS for a while, but will not get that for as long as you would with a quality unit. So the money you saved up front will be spent replacing filters/resins more often -- in the long run will end up costing you more money.

Odd... kind of shocked there is so much dislike with the ebay ro units i must have got a steal on a good one. Side by side comparison to a couple of my friends setups and i was shocked they paid so much for known companies unit. as for my filters they put out 0 tds for a long time...... i should also note i also had a boost pump installed to supply my unit with proper presure

ebay units come with a cheap membrane, therefore you will have to replace the filters more often. Also the DI is horizontal which arent as good.

my ebay unit is sitting in the garage collesting dust. they worked fine for a lil while then they wouldn't get under 10ppm no matter what i did. finally went to a purelyh20 optima pro unit with a BRS dual di add on and never looked back. now the only thing I use from the ebay unit is the reserve tank.

My Ebay unit has been up and running for 2 1/2 years now. I change out the filters about every 6 months and the membrane about once a year and have always had 0 reading on the tds meter. With any RO/DI unit it is a matter of paying attention to the filters and the membrane and doing maintenance on them just like anything else. With the money I saved on the Ebay unit I can afford to replace the membrane twice as often and still be ahead money wise years down the road.

[welcome]

Unless you have just awful water to start with, having to change your RO membrane every year is way too often. Should get anywhere from 3-5 years from a quality RO membrane. I current one is about 2 years old and still operating within its stated rejection rate -- 96-98% -- and I fully expect to get at least another 2 years from it.

Got mine on e-bay but it's from Water General. If you go to filtersdirect.com they sell them there as well. My only gripe is the canisters aren't clear, but whatever. As long as my TDS is 0, I don't complain.

I wouldn't listen to the guys that say it's crap. It's only crap if you buy it and it doesn't work the way you want it to.

I bought my 6-stage RO/DI off of ebay over 5 years ago (Water General was the brand). It had one DI-resin chamber and I added a second chamber (my tap water has a TDS of 465-490). It's going on 5 years and I still use the same membrane. As Todd mentioned, I wasn't fond of the horizontal di-resin chamber due to channeling, so I just bought some extra tubing and added some length so I could position them vertically.

It's been over 5 years, and my "junk ebay unit" has always kept the water at 0 TDS.

I am actually glad others have good luck with them, I didn't though and just stated my opinion.

but your comment is strange, a rodi unit works the same as all no matter what brand and that is to bring your water down to 0 tds so I don't know how you can say that. if it don't get the tds down to 0 even with all new filters then yes I am gonna say it is junk cause it don't do what they are supposed to do.

My brand new Filmtec 98% rejection rate membrane behind brand new sediment and dual Matrikx carbon filters from The Filter Guys still puts out 33TDS at certain times. So I know going in that I am going to burn through more DI resin.

I think its all a crapshoot that depends on your tap water quality (im at over 500TDS), water pressure, water temp.

I agree, I guess my statement was geared more toward equipment in general. I apologize for not making myself clear.

I got a Water General, I get my filters from Air water and Ice. I changed my DI to vertical and since I get 0 tds before it was around 12. I also changed the membrane.

My Water general are clear, hmm
