As far as having a vertical DI filter you can always add that on after the fact to these cheaper RO/DI units. So I say buy the RO unit now and when you get some more money buy the additional DI resin chamber.

Sierra, I picked up my unit on e-bay for $71. Go to www.aquariumwaterfilters.com mine is the Barrracuda 4-stage 100gpd unit. Works great . Im pleased. Keep watching e-bay. You can find GOOD stuff pretty reasonable. Since your not in a hury you can aford to watch and wait. Oh,by the way mine was brand new and shiiped from manufacturer.

If you run copper lines through sand in a slab foundation they will re-act and get many pinhole type leaks, just ask my dad we had to dig in underneath his home to remedy this problem. My point being that copper is not inert. Not trying to be argumentative just simply have a "why chance it" opinion.

Copper can leach into yor drinking water, its not a myth. If your water has a low Langlier Index, meaning the pH, calcium and alkalinity are in a certain range, your water is considered agressive and can eat pipes and solders. Thats why the EPA requires all public water systems to test for lead and copper in drinking water.

Of course a pure source of water is going to react with copper. Pure water will react with most metals in a very reactive form. That is why municipal water supplies add various chemicals and ions into the water to stop this issue.

Actually its not pure water at all, look up Langlier Index. I would say water with a hardness of 20+ and TDs in the 500 range here in Phoenix but with a negative Langlier Index is not pure.

It coats the pipe and prevents the copper from leaching into the water supply. City water is usually pretty balanced the the odds of having corosion in the pipe is not high. At least that is how it is here in the midwest with the great lakes as a water supply.

It seems pretty inexpensive, but the membrane still leaves 20 ppm. Is this too much for the DI to handle over time?

That unit is a cheap Chinese knock off. The vendor will not answer questions as to who makes the membrane and if it is ANSI/NSF certified for drinking water in the US. I would steer clear oof it.
