Echidna polyzona experiences?

I recently picked up a small juvi Echidna polyzona. It eats scallop and shrimp very well. Please share any experiences you have. It will be going in my FOWLR, not my reef. TIA.

Sure, I've read the generic descriptions and such. I'm not worried about being able to keep it, I was just looking for some personal experiences from others. The search in this forum didn't come up with much at all, especially on long term captives. Plenty of threads on snowflakes, zebras, and even a few skeletors.

Thanks for your feedback though.

No worries. In my experience they're less common than snowflakes and therefore there are fewer first hand experiences - if I had one I would certainly have shared it. I've kept skeletors; quite easy to keep and get eating. I did notice there are a few individuals that are more aggressive than I'd expect (I had one that had to be separated from all other eels).

Also, because you didn't say how big it is, very small eels should be fed small meals very regularly. With my smaller skeletors, as well as G. chilospilus, I fed roughly one mouthful (if you can picture that as a unit of measurement, lol) every other day. It worked well and they grew fairly quickly. Once they hit about 12 inches in size you can go twice a week.

Enjoy!

Thanks. I didn't know that about food size/frequency for small eels. This guy will take very large pieces. Is that bad, or just not preferred?

I spoke to someone through PM about this eel, and he confirmed my observations so far that they are quite shy and mellow... hiding a lot, compared to snowflakes, for example.

I have another question about feeding. I've never kept a Echidna species of eel before. Is a simple mix of clams, scallop, shrimp etc balanced enough? Or should I stick some pellets in the meat, so he swallows them with it?

i have a barred moray. mine is very shy and hides all day long. unlike my snowflake which is always poking his head out, my barred will be deep in the rockwork, only poking his head out during feeding time. sometimes in the dark of night you might catch him taking a swim but not often. they do an excelent job of keeping the rockwork clean of any leftover food hiding from the other fish.

I had one, didn't find it to be as reclusive as other accounts. it was housed with a snowflake and g. tile. it was as outgoing as the others. it also ate any food offered, although never used pellets. i've never had an eel take pellets, but some do, seen the video on another site of g. polyurandon eating pellets

Is the"outgoing-ness" of an eel dependent on the species, the individual, or the tankmates?

Here's my little guy being fed in QT. He's so small I doubt I'll move him to the 240 until he grows quite a bit.

Agreed, I hadn't fed him in 4 days, so I figured a larger piece would be OK, and make for good video, since he doesn't come out much otherwise. Normally he just eats left overs off the floor of the QT :)
