do i need an eco smart module to control my mp40 with the apex true the wxm?

Yes. That's the only way the pump can get power. The WXM sends the signals to the driver and it in turn, varies the voltage to the pump.

The older non-Ecosmart wireless MP40 driver will work too.

Any of the wireless EcoTech pumps will work with the WXM module...which includes the MP10w ES and the MP60w ES.

The caveat with the WWD is that Tidal Swell, Nutrient Transport, and Eco-Back modes are unavailable.
