Ecosystem filter on bottom of display?

Anybody thought of having miracle mud on the bottom of the display under a slightly raised eggcrate? Caulerpa could grow through the eggcrate and could feed algae algae grazing fish? The root system of the caulerpa would be protected under the eggcrate.
