Ed Reef's Shallow Crest Inspired ART

What do you mean you are not an "artist?"

I think you are man...your aquascaping and whole tank design is art. Anyway those sketches are awesome! I haven't seen anyone do anything with the above water aspect. Reminds me of those turtle habitat tanks but on a whole new level.

I bet if you plumbed a waterfall coralline would grow on the rocks the water touched...it would be interesting.

Thanks - the idea is inspired by the many Takashi Amano' style aquascape in FW and I'm trying to achieve something similar but with SW instead.

The aquascaping has to be artistically done and yet be as natural as possible with overhangs and plenty of open swimming space for my fishes. The main challenge is trying to keep the right composition with the top landscaping and bottom aquascape and at the same time to achieve all this in a mere 40cm shallow tank will be most tricky"¦. :eek1:

I just stumbled across your tank and wanted to say it looks amazing. From one shallow peninsula style tank lover to another...Kudos. ;)

I wish I could say I'm one of those people who "went back and read the whole thing from the beginning," but I'm really not... :p

Continued success!

Well it will be quite a read with those splits lol

Glad you like it.... :D I'm also subscribe to your build since day 1 also and you have done a great job too....

WELL"¦..what do you all think of my "œLost Horizon" theme aquascape??

I'm not 100% satisfied yet as I still need to source for some smaller pieces of dry rocks to make the top and bottom sections looks more like a continues piece of mountain

Comments guys??

Very nice aquascape!
And a first class display build.
I like the trend away from rock piles and more into scapes.
Great thread to follow Ed.
md!

That is a very original layout. I can imagine some Mangrove prop roots around , over and into the water line.

NICE!!

i love the look, especially in the last pic.

i have been following since the first week as a silent observer, and have enjoyed watching both the art of the scape as well as the precision of the mechanics, not to mention the amazing speed which you have built and stocked this tank

it is great to finally see the island take form, but i wonder about the plant you have chosen. if its a live plant needle leaves are notoriously messy here in the states, and id hate to see the tank over flow because something was clogged with needles, but my bigger fear is that the plant is fake, your beautiful piece of living art can not be topped off with a fake plant

but that is just my opinion and constructive criticism, but your vision is truly amazing

Nice Job Ed,

I actually thought of doing that also but with mangrove in my frag tank.

One thing "concerns" me, I'm not sure if it's the picture but these rocks seems to shadows all the corals under it, are you gonna move them or they still receive enough light ?

Keep taking a LOt of picture for us :P

Thanks
Alex B.

That is very creative. I love it. What kind of plant is that? Can they grow in salt water? Where are you going to put the waterfall?

Thanks MD - hopefully we will see more trends of display for reef tanks - similar to what we see for FW tanks display :D

Being 'different' sometimes can be difficult BUT like I say below "Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can only be explored by those willing to take the risks."

Thanks DiazE - glad you like it but I hate to be disappointing you but you most probably won't see mangrove roots growing into the waterline as I didn't used any mangrove but a dead branch instead :p

Thanks eyesinthedrk and glad you're still following this thread since Day 1 and finally getting you to post something :p

As for the 'needle leave plant', you're right, it's actually fake as my concern was the leaves falling into the overflow. However, the plan is this is only temporary as the rocks I choose for this set-up is actually very porous and will abort water like a sponge and over time, green moss and tiny plants will start to grow over the rocks, making it more natural looking. When this happen, I will start to remove the 'needle leaves'

But do keep the constructive criticism coming lol

Not easy trying something new and being difference and I'm expecting tons of criticism but at the same time I'm hoping that this will start a trend for more 'creative' reef display, like what we see revolution in FW displays around the world

Wow that is cool. Now all you need is a parrot for the tree :)

Parrot?? I'm thinking butterflies
