Call your commercial SCE rep, Anthony. They will usually send out someone to look for power savings for free, and also the rep may be able to suggest one of the commercial discount plans. There's one where you agree to use something like 15% less when their power reserves reach a certain low. Maybe you could do that plan and cut lighting to half during that period, or something like that?

turn down all the lights in your tank, if you have it running 8-12 hours cycle, cut it down to 4-6 hours, cut down skimmer at night.
Plug all your tv, computer, charger...etc. into a 4-8 outet extension, turn it off so no staying by B/S.

Muni utilities aren't supposed to turn a profit. They are publicly owned, kind of like roads and fire department.
The only thing I mess about Sacramento is SMUD. To think I got ****ed -- ****ED! -- when they adding a flat $5 surcharge to everyone's bills to pay for developing some new biomass plant or something during the middle of the California "energy crisis." I even went to the meeting and pitched a fit. My problem? My electric bill was only $15, so that meant it was a 25% rate increase for me! I thought the fee should have bene adjusted for usage.

haha, that's no good... can't blame the tank, its supposed to make everyone relaxed. I'm not looking forward to the bill right now and our lights aren't even on that much. Halides are on probably 4 hours a day from 6-10 and the actinics are on 6 hours. We'll see what the damage is soon. But yeh, stop by if you want to check it out whenever your free. That way you can see how you want to mount the VHOs

I am also very concerned with the price of electricity and SCE with my bill being $570 for 2111 kWh with a daily average of 63.97 kWh. I just split my MH's (4 over 2 tanks) that run 9 hrs. I now put each on its own timer to run 6 hours each over each side of the tanks to give each tank 12 hours of light. By doing this I shortened the lighting by 3 hours per light. Should make a big difference in billing and not on the SPS I hope.
For the guru's out there here is a thought that you might be able to help me on. SCE has a program "Time of Usage" that runs from I think 8am - 6pm m-f not on holidays or weekdays. You get a small daily baseline to run like a refig and a few small items with all your large items after those hours and I was told by SCE that I could save at least $200 a month. But if you go over that baseline, you get nailed. This program requires a special meter and a monthly fee. I don't know the fees.
Now here is the question. My (and everyone else) bill shows I get hit at the more than 100% over baseline charge. This month it was 354. What size of solar panel system would I need to make it most cost effective. The over 100% was 1111 kWh. If I could make this disappear and transfer that to a solar system, It would pay for itself rather quickly.
I saw someone mention a 500Kwh system. I take it that is its monthly production??

A couple of odds and ends I have picked up trying to figure cost/ ROI:
Batteries need to be replaced every 5-10 years.
You should have your system inspected yearly.
You should get up on the roof and house off your solar modules every 4-6 months.
MOST systems do not produce power a night and produce less power on cloudy days. But if you get a big enough system, net metering (energy credits for excess power returned to the local power utility grid) during the day will cover the costs of the power you pull at night from the main grid.
Only SOME systems cover power outages.

Try to shallow a $922.16 electric bill for 1500 sq. ft. house. Luckily, right after we got this bill our 34 year old AC fried. New AC is going in on Friday.
IF new AC doesn't have a huge effect on the bill, I can't justify my tank anymore. But, theres still the 30 year old pool equipment. Maybe I can still use that as an excuse.

My PC draws 325 watts total using the Kill-A-Watt meter so now Im surfing reefcentral with a laptop.
I used to run my actinics 12 hours a day. Since actinics is mostly for show I set it to run 4 hours a day when Im home. My actinic uses 150 watts total
I had about 5 cordless phones around the house. Now I only use one. Each cordless phone base uses about 15 watts each x 5 = 75 watts total.

My bill for June to be paid in July was $678, up from low $400's the month before.
Badbones, let me/us know how that is working for you putting lights on half and half cycle. I have just cut my light cycles down to 9 hours or so but both on simultaneously.
I have seriously considered selling the tank, I can't afford this. I have to run AC. I live in Palmdale, temps 100+ daily so I also run chillers. One thing I'm thinking of is investing in swamp cooler so I don't have to run AC

i wonder if buying that PFO solaris LED thing will help cut the costs. I saw the initial cost of the unit, but in energy savings might be worth it...
I will try and get the contact info from the company my parents used on our house. They do both residential and commercial installations. We are using them again for a 140kwh system. Maybe they can give everyone interested a presentation at our house and we can turn it into a frag swap.

For example, I installed a multi-switch device in my living room and hooked up the TV, stereo, DVD player, etc. I rarely use them, but they sit there on standby pulling power. Now I turn them all off completely, and that ONE change that month saved me $20 a month!
The multi-switch device cost $29... so it paid for itself in 6 weeks.
