Educating LFSs?

I just had a disheartening experience at one of LFSs. I'm looking for a sea hare and stopped in at a LFS in Binghamton and they had a Blue spot that didn't look very good and one labeled "Colored Sea Slug - Great for Algae!". After some research on the net I confirmed my suspicion that it's a member of the nudibranch family and that it eats a poisonous sponge. After confronting the partner of the store he stated that he didn't time correctly ID the "hundreds of animals" he carries. I handed him the papers I printed out showing the correct ID and care for it he threw them out and huffed off.

I offered to buy the sea hare at a reduced price since it was ailing but he said that his prices are set and that he has the lowest of the town. I was hoping to be able to save at least one of those poor animals... but alas I cannot pay full price.

Needless to say.. I won't be shopping there again. I really wish these store would care... at least a little bit.

VERY VERY disheartening.

I agree with you more than you know. Not to point the finger, but was the word Dr. in the name? He had everything WAY overpriced when i was there, and had a clump of red leafy algae that he was trying to sell as "Toxic Red Mushrooms" for around $70! That was enough to make me turn around and walk out, never to return! If you have some time, make a trip to Van Etten and check out Finnyas Reef! It's the best store in the area in my opinion, and the prices are awesome. As are the two guys running the place! www.finnyas.com

Frank,

I'm thinking of heading up there tomorrow. I know they have several of them in stock. It just stinks that we have to go out of town or mail order because our local stores don't give a darn about the creatures they're selling. This guy would rather sell these animals under false pretenses or write them off. He just plain didn't care.

Oh yes, yet another crappy LFS! It's kind of hit and miss with these stores. Some people care and some just want to steal your money. Half the time i feel like i'd be better off going to Petco! But I finally found a great store where they actually care about what they are selling to you, so thats where i'll be going

I think we all have some wicked stories from our lfs my best was when a couple wanted to use table salt instead of reef salt because it was cheaper:eek2: I only stop in for salt (sometimes) and food I wont even look at the critters any more:rolleyes:
