eel in reef tank

snow flake eel reef safe dave has one in his tank that is a baby about 8 inchs long he hand feeds i was wondering if they can be done in a 75 with medium sized fish.

Eels are more a threat to your livestock than your corals (although technically they are livestock.) I'd just worry about them going after any shrimp....

Other thing you gotta think about is that they're impossible to catch in a reef tank without tearing apart the entire tank.

Elmer's has an awesome ribbon eel in right now. One of the few times I wished I wasn't rimless, and my fish weren't so small... or it definitely would have gone home with me.

FWIW... I had a snowflake in a 55g reef tank for 2 yrs. Never bothered anything. He jumped during a tank transfer when I had all the livestock in holding containers though, and I didn't find him until it was too late.

how much im looken for a snowflake eel and ribons get big dont they. if there not to bad price i might get one and im affreid of the shirmp to but i been advised if you feed them regurly they are fine with most live stock.

They'll be ok with any animal they can't catch easily. Pretty sure mine went to town on some chromis I had a while back though. Anytime they're sleeping at night and your eel can just come right out and grab an easy snack...of course, my eel is over 2 feet long now too. Still, until 6 months ago, he was a dweller of my reef tank, and I never had any problems with him bothering any of my livestock...

i like the idea of haveing one they add something extra to the take when people come over its a talking piece like ya look at all the nice coral and fish but look at my big *** eel. i love them there so cool lol.

I do not reccomend a snowflake eel in a reef tank.... I bought one of those cute little fellows for my reef tank when i was first setting it up.... he wasa 8 inches long...and really cool, until shrimp and crabs started comming up missing... then fish..... all total less than 10 bucks for the eel and 120 bucks worth of livestock and the 6 hours it took to entirely gut my tank to catch the little sucker.....I'd say it is cheeper to set up a new tank to house the eel and for sure a loss less hassle when it comes time to get rid of the viscious little eater....so I VOTE NO..... but that is just my exsperience and I am still new to the reef tank.

I've got a Zebra Moray in my 375 gallon reef (was in my 135 previously) about three feet long. Never bothers anything but it also likes to hide in the rocks a lot.

yeah, I have heard that if you hand feed them, daily to control their appetite, you can keep them (any type) in a reef w/o disruptions. I've never had the stones to try since regular feedings make really BIG eels.....
