Anyone ever accidentally let their Ca drop way too low (like, 300 ppm or lower)? What effects did you notice?

So i just got back from a business trip and of course trusted the wife to maintain my tank levels. Come home to find alk at 6.5 and cal at 380 from 9.5 alk and 450 cal.........

Needless to say my doser went up yesterday, so hopefully i can count on that.....

Nothing negative to report, i still had growth and color.......

I have had a recent experience with what I think is chronically low calcium that caused bleaching and tissue loss.

I normally run my SPS tank with the following parameters

Alk= 7.5 -7.8,
P04= 0
Nitrates=0 ,
calcium=400.

Over the last month or two, my acros started to get really pale, some of my stags even bleached in high light spots and some begun to lose tissue at the base and undersides.

I had made no changes at all in months.

At a loss, I got all new test kits (or reagents)

I found that my calcium is actually down around 370-380. While that in itself is not that bad, I think its low enough that when pushing every other parameter to the minimal, it was the final straw.

within just a week or so of bumping the calcium up to about 420 things are starting to look better.

The only thing that might happen would be slow/no growth of the corals because they use calcium to make their new exoskeleton.

don't you hate it when you have to go away on a business trip only to come back to chaos. I remember going away in the 90's coming back to dead fish piranha. Later on coming home to dead iguana ..2000's lost acro due to alk spike finally automation is making it more and more user friendly. The emails from the controller to watching the tank via skype is awesome..sorry for the high jack..
I feel your pain..

LOL the thing is the whole time she said the tank was perfect....... one more week and i would have lost everything :beer:

I Just came back from a week of work, the wife pretty much just knows how to feed the fish and that is when I call her and ask. I come home to sand being blown everywhere due to a new powerhead, flipped over frags, and a empty ATO. Tank is great she said! one more day and I would have lost my frags...
