Egg Crate?

I am planning on putting egg crate under my LR. My question is do I just put it under my LR or cover the whole bottom with it?

Thanks
Steve

I was going to place eggcrate on the bottom of tank as well. But I decided against doing it because I thought the squares might create dead zones- where debris might accumulate in the sand bed. I'm not sure, but I think after awhile it might become a source of nitrates. I was doing a shallow sand bed, it might be different if your going to have a DSB where you basically have dead zones anyway.

Some people will use eggcrate to support the weight of their rocks in bare bottom systems. If you put some type of support underneath the eggcrate (like small cuttings of PVC) to lift the eggcrate off the bottom of the tank, then you can avoid most dead spots.

I wouldn't too much worry about eggcrate on the bottom of the tank if you are doing a DSB. Only if you are doing a plenium. If you are looking for support of the LR...use pieces of PVC

Wondering the same.....

Our scenario is a 150 acrylic (about 6 weeks out) with a 3" live sandbed.

PROS:

Will prevent scratches to acrylic
Will prevent (help) rock slides

CONS

"IF" there is even a remote possibility of a chemical issue later on we can't do it -- can't take the chance. Fixing it would be a nightmare.

Sorry to hijack thread but this is a pretty important decision at this point so we are looking for opinions from the experts here to advise.

Thanks!

ps: We posted this question last week and received mixed responses...

i personl use eggcrate, on top of a PVC frame that is drilled out for water flow through... the PVC is set on the bottom of the tank and the eggcrate is sicured to the PVC with zip ties. the sand was put in after so there would be no compacting of the sand. it has worked great for me the PVC and eggcrate grow coraline and other green alge that covers it so you dont see it. i have made a double layer set back shelf with it....not chemical problems at all....some people use peices of PVC in there filters because it is a porice matter that lets alge as well as many types of benifical bacteria grow on and in it. so as you can see it is not harful to the ecosystem in your tank or tank to be....

I was going to use eggcrate, but at the recommendation of someone here(sorry, forgot who), the use of a plastic cutting board instead of eggcrate. I had to buy two cutting boards and cut them to fit around my overflow. It worked fine. A little more expensive, but it won't trap crap:D .

Now that's interesting.... what kind of cutting board? What's it made out of?

The one recommended was from a particular website. I'll try to dig up the old thread, cause I don't remember the website. Not sure if any plastic cutting board would do.
