If your purpose is to to provide a base on which to put your rock (to eliminate point loading), then a sheet of acrylic is better. Eggcrate ends up creating pockets in the sand.
I'll have to look into starboard. I do not plan on puttying/ cementing my rocks or using acrylic rods. I have enough sand for a ~2" sandbed, but I'm putting the rocks in before the sand and I'd like to protect the glass as much as I can.
