Eheim 1260 too much flow?

It seems that my Eheim 1260 return pump is generating too much flow for my 1.5 inch drain to keep handle. Can I restrict the flow with a ball valve? Or do I need a smaller pump like the Eheim 1250?

My DT is 100G, sump is 40G (20G filled).

Thanks,
Ron

I have a 100 gallon with Eheim 1260 and 1.5" drain with no issues. What type standpipe are you using?

I use a stockman standpipe which is dead silent. Not that it should matter but, I also have the drain feeding the protein skimmer.

Something else is wrong, 1.5 bulkhead will flow more than 600 gph and the 1260 w/ 4 ft of head is not over 450 gph. Are your using 3/4 inch drain line?

I'm using 1.5 inch drain line. I was just told that it's ok for me to turn down the flow with a ball valve, so I'm gonna try that as soon as I get home

As drtrash said, if your 1-1/2" bulkhead can't handle an Eheim 1250, you've got something very wrong going on. That bulkhead should be able to handle 1K gals an hour (and more) easy. My suggestion would be that you thy to find out what the problem is, rather than choke off your pump and waste the flow.

Let the overflow combs and chamber slime up with some bacteria, also the drain line. The flow will smooth out and the sound will diminish.

Also, if your drain line is sloped, it will be less likely to entrain air and gurgle.

I would try to use a gate valve instead of a ball valve to fine tune your Eheim 1260 output.

My return pipe is 3/4 inch, and I can't find anything wrong with my drain piping.

I have turned down the pump flow and it's all well now.

Thank you all for responding.

Ron
