Eheim 1262 For 150gal Return?

I have a 150Gal reef dual overflow and using a little giant for my returns. The little giant is noisy and adds heat to the tank. The little giant is rated at 1325 GPH and the eheim is 900 GPH. I would use the eheim external. In my tank for circulation I have 2 Tunze 6000 running with a multi controller which provides lots of water movement. In my sump I have a H&S skimmer and fuge. My turnover rate will now be around 6 times an hour with the eheim. Is this OK? Anyone else using a eheim for a 150Gal?
 
I'm not sure if its enough or not but thats what I use on my 125+sump.

Its nice and quiet and runs cool.
 
General rule of thumb for a return is 3 - 5X display volume, so 6X is on the high side.

Edit, that is 3 - 5x after headloss. The 1262 should be right there. Should work out well.

I use that pump on my 75gal. I would go higher and avoid having to put in a closed loop.
 
He already has Tunze in the display for the major flow. Getting more pump would just mean more heat for him, and possibly more hassle...

I have it in both applications.

All of them are plummed with 1 in ID hose to cut down vibration and keep the use of the barb fitting that comes on the pumps.

So for my external pump, I have a 1" bulk head fitting out of my sump and an elbow then a true union valve then a barb fitting, a piece of 1" tubing then the pump.

Its quiet and barely warm to the touch. Make sure you put a little pad under it. I use cheap black mouse pads from a computer store.

Ehiem fittings are metric but the sizes are so close that you can use an "American" fitting but you need lots of teflon tape or it will leak. You can buy an adapter too.

I don't like to do it because if you crack the pump, its shot..

I say sched 80 Vs 40 because the sched 80 is longer. The 40 will barely thread in. The 80 is the same length as the fittings it comes with.
 
going beyond 3-5x turnover for a tank in your sump is actually going to hurt you more than do you good. DO NOT USE A HIGH FLOW PUMP FOR YOUR SUMP! The efficiency and power to keep your aquarium clean will be greatly reduced if you have a ton of flow through your sump. The 1262 will be perfect and yes you can run it external to reduce heat. For additional flow you will have to use powerheads or a closed loop if needed.
 
I use the 1262 on my 215 and it works perfectly. You should absolutely run it internally though. It's much quiter and safer that way. Like all external/internal pumps the only thing holding the water in the pump is a very thin gasket (well, 2 gaskets in the E-heims case.) The pump cools itself with the water flowing through it anyway so there's no real advantage to running it externally that I can think of. I just dropped mine in the sump and ran 3/4" a schedule 80 extension pipe up off of it and connected two 3/4" return lines with a T joint. Installation took about 10 minutes total. I'm VERY happy with my E-heim 1262.

You should absolutely run it internally though. It's much quiter and safer that way.
I have a eheim on my Geo reactor that has a screw in fitting into the suction side of the pump. I did use lots of teflon tape to stop it from leaking and all is well. I never thought about it leaking from the gasket. I would put the pump in my sump but don't have room on the return side. I have to install 2 eheims externally. One to replace the Giant for my returns and the other to replace the Giant that runs my chiller and calcium reactor. I already have 2 external 1" bulkheads which I want to use. Now you have me thinking about it leaking from the gaskets. Are Eheims know to leak?
