Eheim Jager Heater Issue: What Am I Missing

Hi All,

I got 2 Eheim Jager Heaters for QT tanks (doing TTM). Both QT tanks are 20 gallons and both heaters are 75 watt sized for tanks between 15 & 26 gallons. I have 2 digital thermometers. One for each tank.

So I turned dial on heater to 79 degrees and heater heats tank past 79 degrees via thermometer and won't shut off. Finally it got to 82.5 degrees and I shut it off by unplugging it. I added the second thermometer to varify tanks temp. Second thermometer stays with .2 degrees of initial thermometer so I can conclude that the thermometer is accurate. So I decide to calibrate heater via their directions. Still heater won't stop heating. I turn heater temp to 70 degrees to see if it will shut off. It won't. So I assume that new heater is defective and heat element is getting stuck "œon". I decide to try second heater to verify defective first heater. Second heater won't shut off either.

No way they are both defective. What am I missing?

You are missing a controller -- & anything is possible --
No you know why they are recommended.
Inkbird brand seems to be popular along with Ranco.

Ordered two Inkbirds right after I posted this thread. Only reason I didn't have them was because I didn't think of needing them on a qt. And I ended up getting one of the heaters to work properly. The other I think is stuck.

I have used Eheim Jager Heaters for 7 years without any problems. They do have a 3 degree swing. If you calibrate it to 79 degrees it will turn off at 82 degrees. I have mine set at 77 degrees and it turns off at 80.

Take the 'stuck' heater, throw it in a 5 gallon bucket of water, and just let it sit. See how hot it gets the bucket. It shouldn't hurt anything.

I'm only using eheim Jager, and I've got one that I have to set to 77 and one that I set to 80, and they both turn on at 79-80 or so. So they aren't perfect, but if yours is staying on forever and not turning off its definitely time to get a new one.
