Electric Bills?

Mchava I think I got mine at OSH if I remember correctly. they are also available on line.

Freed what are you paying per kilowat in IN? The last time I looked it was $0.1539 per kilowat average, but we have had several price increases recently. plus it goes up as your usage goes up.

Go through the house to see what else might be the problem. That doesn't sound like the tank is the culprit there

If your paying the bills around the house then you tell you are entitled to keep the tank. However, if you dont then you really need to sel it, lol. SOrry about the bills but i only pay about 100 a month.

Check your meter...

Check your meter...

I have noticed my bill has been going up every month, but my eletrical usage really has not increased. I went through all of the bills for the last 7 motnhs and found a trend. Every month the electric co. was raising my rate and not letting me know about it. I called them and they said that they were raising the rate due to demand and summer. Summer rate is way more expensive than winter and you are allowed less kilowatts per day. They got us by the you know whats. I started reading my meter everyday at the same time, and found that it was wrong, so I requested them to come out and test the meter, and they did after a week or so. They took a reading and will compare it to what the remote reading says to make sure there is nothing wrong. They havent told me the results yet, but I am sure they will lie about it. Bottom line is have them come out and check your meter and also read it yourself. They can tell you how to read it if your not sure. I am requesting them to replace my meter, and when they do I am sure I will see a drop in my bill. So go back and check your previous bills to see if they have done something without you knowing. But dont give up.

You cant get rid of that awesome tank simon....Its so nice!!!!! You do have it in the hot garage though and Im sure that chiller runs longer to cool it down...

"We should start a thread for people to post the electrical usage of their various tank components. Such Brand X pump puts out 800 GPH and uses XX kilowatts an hour to run. If we could do it on a spread sheet some how then people would be able to spot a pump that was not performing as it should."

Isn't that pretty much what the calculator does for us? Says mine is about 180 a month for the tank alone (which I find hard to believe, frankly, but numbers ARE numbers... They don't really lie!).

Honestly, I'm looking harder and harder at Solar. Sure, it'll take close to 15 years to pay off, but with a lifetime of (usually) at least 30 years, it really does make financial sense.

The calculator is just an estimate. Your pump might be using twice the RC estimate. It could be just an inefficient pump or it may mean there is a problem with it. Either way having specific numbers to compare yours to will tell you. Then if you decided to replace it you can make an informed decision base on real numbers not manufactures inflated claims.

kernelangus They have changed the electrical usage calculator since I last used it, but it still does not tell you if you have an inefficient piece of equipment. It is easier to fill out an excel spread sheet with you info and utility rate then using the RC calculator that way you can keep track of what your system is doing or if you make minor changes. either way you need to know what you items are actually using.

Mine was 425 last mo.... I think the tank takes 100-150 a mo.. sucks but what u gonna do....

I may drop some hrs off the lights tomorrow, to see if it helps.. I run my MH for 11 hrs a day.

The problem with that is that pumps are not consistant in energy usage. As head pressure increases, most pumps draw less energy. So it really depends on the application of the pump to how many watts it will draw.

Just curious, if his chiller is in the garage would that cause it to be on quite a bit? I'm not sure where the tank is, but the chiller doesn't have enough cold air to cool down the tank? I think the JBJ 1/4 hp runs about 600+ Watts. Did his $625 bill just jump up right away? Or as it always been around there?

His tank and chiller are in the garage....I told him last night Ill bet that chiller runs way too much....Ill bet if he moved the tank in the house it would cut the bill way down

Since his tank has always been in there, how much was his bill the previous months? I know this past month has been pretty hot. I could not imagine the tank in the garage during this time of the year. I think it has to be about 100F in there! How much does 600W for 3/4 of the month cost???

Hey Laverda where did you find the kilowatt meter. I have looked around and can not find one. If you can help me out the would be appreciated.
Mario

Hey Mario, can you bring the air flow meter by Monday? I need to check out my new venturie pull.

Thanks,
Loc

dont kniow about you guys but I run 5 Mh, 1/3 chiller, many pumps and power heads on 3 diff systems and my bill is anywhere near $600. Last month was way under $200, but then again we dont have AC, only about 10 fans running all day long :D

$625 ?

It's not the tank dude.

My bill for cooling my 2,400 sq/ft house + running my 120g reef tank, (3 pumps, powerheads, heaters, 1/4hp chiller, 500W MH lighting, etc, etc,), is $136 a month.

I'm under So Cal Edison in Mission Viejo, CA.

You know, this reminds me: I recently picked up a Kill a Watt P3 for monitoring the draw for my tank. I hooked it up but haven't had the opportunity to play with it much (although, right now, with 2 MJ1200's, a MAK4, 4 4" ice cap fans and an Eheim 1262, I'm at 121 watts).

Maybe I should pay a bit more attention to that thing... ;)

Although, I don't pay it much attention because it isn't mounted high enough to see easily. I'm supposed to get a power center going, but I think everyone pretty much knows how THAT goes... Yet another thing to get around to.
