Electrobes' K.I.S.S. 40Br Thread

I wanted to elaborate on my slower output.. I am fooling with the flow regulator and even at the point of closing the valve all the way I still get slower than should be flow.

I am in the midst of repairing the booster pump leak... on my third try (Twice thus far today).. let's hope this does it.

Update on fixes

Update on fixes

What a PITA the booster pump and the Unit have been. I pretty much have the booster pump leaks fixed, and the unit has been checked for it's own leaks, and luckily I have none. After two tried I've set everything back up and ran it. I am now back to my two prior problems.

- Output from the Unit is still slower than it should be. It's going about half (If not a little better) the rate it is supposed to be doing. Instead of 5G per hour, I get about 2.5G-3G an hour. I've fiddled with the flow valve (On the waste water tube) but at maximum closure (Or dang near) I stil on get what I mentioned above.

- My TDS is still reading 4ppm. It dropped to 2ppm but when I ran it the second time it's gone back to 4ppm, after running it for about an hour. Most disappointing.

At this rate I am going to contact the company and see what they have to say. I'll also asked about the flow valve... this should go well

OK... I think I know what your probelm is with respect to the TDS.... your DI filter is shot (and undersized)
DSCN3521Small.jpg

I had the same type of DI filter on the RO/DI setup I purchased and had TDS levels in the 3-7 range and could not figure it out. I finally bought a larger DI resin filter from Buckeye Field Supply and it had my TDS at ZERO in no time! Russ at BFS said that the small DI units, positioned horizontally, are CRAP and dont work as well as a standard DI filter that is used in a 10" filter housing.

Good news: There is a solution
Bad news: It involves more of your hard-earned $$$ :D

My set up came with three attached to the filter.. I thought that was crazy.. but maybe not?

I've had this exact filter in Florida for a year without the TDS going higher than 0, and the water source's TDS s-u-c-k-e-d. My water source TDS now is 64ppm.

Buty oh well.. I'll give Buckeye an order and pray it works. unfortunately this still doesn't solve my output flow being slow.. unless you think the spent DI resin is causing the trouble?

In my never ending saga with getting an aquarium yet another bump in the road has come. My LFS called to say they had my aquarium to pick up but that it was slightly damaged. The supplier offerred 15 bucks off if I wanted it. So I first facepalmed and then went to the LFS.

The thing they were looking at as damaged was the trim.. looked like someone fell asleep while routing or something. Aside from that I decided to leak test it.. if it passed then I would accept the offer. I did a leak test and every seam passed.. except for one that looked as bad as the worst seam on the second tank I had to send back. When I was looking closer at it I saw a chip.. another facepalm.

Another thing I noticed was that the silicone job done by Perfecto really sucked. It was the sloppiest job I've seen in a while. I was shocked... it was all wavy.. thick on one side but not the other. It even looks like they overlapped twice on the bottom but didn't apply pressure. Bloody wonderful

Dude!!!!

I think the 40-Breeder Gods are against you on your efforts to setup your tank. With that being said, simply explain to your wife that the cosmic forces of the universe said that the 40-Breeder was not going to work out,.... so they recomended the 75 gallon instead! J/K :D

I cant imagine the frustration.

It's funny, I think she may be at the point of feeling sorry for me. I haven't a clue what's going on... I am this close to just saying screw it, buying a 300G rubbermaid tub and make my soft coral/clam dominated look down tank. I'd have more success with wood working the surrounding and light canopy than finding a working 40Br!!

Excellent! You seem to be gaining the advantage here...!

Now move in for the kill... ("the kill" being a 400 gallon in-wall setup with full fish-room extension to the house.... and a new M3 (why not?) :D)

Small Update:

I just did a water change on the rock bin and started filling the empty bucket with RO/DI. After fixing everything and now loosening the flow restrictor I get 0ppm for TDS. Go figure. Now I only have one problem.. the flow rate sucks. Since I have a smaller tank I will deal... I only need 5G a shot anyway

Granted this would all matter more if I could just find a bloody tank that can comfortable hold water :(

Are you ever in the Durham NC area? I have a new AGA 40B for sale. Probably not, but I thought I'd ask since it looks like you're having some problems getting one.

To be honest, if I wasn't already involved with a store trying to get me on (I've already paid for it), now am waiting for a new one, I'd probably drive up there if I knew it would safely hold water. ;)

Funny thing is that when I returned the tank today I saw the 30G Oceanic with stand and thought... maybe I should get one of those!

Either that or create a look-down tank with a DIY stand and canopy with a Stock Tank!

Dont do it!!!

The 12" front-to-back SUCKS! (trust me... I have a 30 now).

Heh I keed, but I will seriously consider making a look down tank with a stock tank (Rubbermaid) if this next tank ends up not working either. I mean enough is enough!

I should mention that I got bored and did design what this look down tank would look like and what not :D As you can tell I have high hopes for this tank coming in

 that explains what happend to me!

ive been trying to set my 75g up for probably over 3 years now. its been so long ive forgotten when i bought the tank! ive had it since i lived in california, and ive been in texas for 2 years! the tanks brand spankin' new, never seen a drop of water!

i was at brian jackson (greenmako's) home today for a club meeting and saw his sweet 300g tank (totm march 08) its so depressing... not the tank, but that i dont have a tank!

what's your psi at with the booster pump?
edit: also, which one did you get? the 8800 would be the one you need given the 100gpd rating of your ro membrane.

It's a PJ-V 6010: 100PSI, .48GPM (Made for 100GPD RO/DI Units according to the retailer).

Update on the Unit: I still haven't receievdd an email from Aquasafe which sucks considering I always thought they were alright. But I guess it happens.

Wow.. you're crazier than I am! ;)

Algae in the Rock Bin

Algae in the Rock Bin

So I am experiencing the expected algae bloom in the rock bin. It could be of many factors, but I'm betting it's the rock possibly having phosphates and other detritus that I couldn't get off when I cleaned it off.

DSCN3592Small.jpg

On a 1-10 scale with 1 being little to no algae, and 10 being the worse I would say it's at about a 5-6. I am still running the lights as normal (Both actinics and daylight bulbs). I figure better to harvest this algae out so as not to introduce it to the tank later.

I did a 5G water change on the 9th, and today I did a 10G water change. It was mainly to take out the bits and pieces of algae left over after the scrub down I did off the walls of the bin. I am thinking that from now on I will be sticking with 10G changes instead of the 5G changes.

Other Updates

- So my skimmer should be shipped out today if they got their shipment in for the BH-100F's. I never got a response about whether they recieved their shipment or not on Monday. Here's hoping they did.. I dunno if I can wait for yet another 3-4 weeks to get this skimmer. At this point it's going to turn out like my tank.. I'll make my own or get another one! :p

- My shipment from Foster and Smith should be here the 15th. It makes it nice as I can use my ebo-jaguer (Staying steady at 79, even if it's set to 71!) for the water mixing bucket.
