great looking tank! the aquascape looks really natural compared to some tanks I see, and I love that fact that most of your corals are softies/ zoas/ mushrooms! the less rare zoas and softies dont get enough love, IMHO. the only thing that I dont like about the rockwork is that it doesnt leave much swimming room, but as long as you dont plan on adding angels, larger wrasses or large clownfish, it will be great!

actually, I tried to take some of the mound of rock reef look for my 20g nano I just set up!

Thanks :)

About the fish, I only have two damsels right now (Used to have three) but I am looking to add a damsel and a six-line wrasse or just two damsels.

There is also a bunch of room inside the rockwork as it sits on a pvc skeleton. It's nice for flow-through but the fish love it as hiding is made easy.

We gots pictures coming today, I changed around one of the powerheads a I wanted surface disturbance for 100% of the tank.. not 75%. Now everyone in the tank gets some flow and there is monster gas exchange going on.

Pics time!

These are from a couple days ago when I had to do some cleaning on the tank. I missed a few spots but oh well. I also rearranged a powerhead and did a 5G water change.

And these pics are of today. I am terrible with a camera plus my camera sucks so I apologize in advance. Eventually I'll be better in both respects. :)

As some of you have noticed even after 7 months of VHO lighting, great parameters, etc I still have no corraline worth mentioning. I see bits here and there, but overall the system refuses to make me corraline-happy.

thats wierd that you dont have any coralline with your ca, alk and mg levels where they're at.

what is that in the pic?

Hey Chrismunn: That coral is a torch. I was trying to stop the flash from going so I stuck my finger over it.. unfortunately the red (Flash + finger) distorted the color! Without the flash I get fuzzy pics at the slightest movement... so I've resorted to sticking the finger over it.

Holy crap J, I was just thinking about this thread and poof! there it was towards the top :)

I am going to update everything tomorrow.. have changed a bunch o stuff, mainly thanks to a very successful 40Br reefer here, Aquabucket. Truth be told I don't think my tank has looked better! Here's to tomorrow when the pics come.

So here are some updates as I've been slacking!

- I have changed my tank to very similar specifications as Aquabucket's tank: I will have a ball of chaeto in the display (Within the rockwork), my flow has been kicked down a notch to about an average of a realistic 530gph (Technically 585).

- Instead of a HOB filter with carbon, I have a whisper 20i (Internal 125 gph filter) with it's floss cartridge and using Black Diamond carbon.

- I have three MJ-900's on a wavmaker instead of 2.

The bonus about this set-up is this:

- Everything is inside the tank but well hidden, minus the powerheads.

- I FINALLY achieved 0 micro-bubbles!

- The soft corals seem to enjoy this set up more.

- No more chemical warfare.

I forgot to post the water parameters.. so far so good.. even without my more consistent dosing of Mag (Just about the only thing I dose):
Date and Time: 01/06/09 4:50pm

Calc: 450ppm by Salifert
Mag: 1290ppm by Salifert
Alk: 9.6dKH or 3.43 meq/L by Salifert
pH: 8.3 Salifert
Amm: Not Detectable by API
Temp: 78.3 F by Lifegard Thermometer
Sal: 1.025 by Refractometer

Reefwho?: I took the skimmer off a couple months ago. While the skimmate was fantastic, the microbubbles I just could not stop, no matter what I did. I ended up taking it off, and copied Aquabucket's style as his tank is nearly identicle to mine in size and stock choice.

As I stand the system is looking pretty good. I had a slight outbreak of Bryopsis but I harvested the algae out and am boosting Mag with Tech M for back up.

I see a couple of flaws with my system and I went shopping online to remedy some of the things, plus try some new things out:

- Surface skimmer: Even with the Whisper 20i and a MJ-900 breaking the surface I still have surface scum. I am going to attach a surface skimmer to the MJ breaking the surface. This should solve my surface scum issue, but at the same time also solve my probably lack of aeration for the tank. We'll see, I am looking forward to trying it out.

- 120 oz of Tech M, I ran out and Drsfostersmith has a good price on them.

- Polyfilter: I've always wanted to try this out so I bought a three-pack. I'll update with the results.

- Whisper 20i bags: I am out. I use this mainly when I stir up the sand bed or turkey basting the tank to collect the detritus and prevent a cloud from appearing.

Another thing I am excited about is my slow transition from using 2 X aquasuns + 1 X super actinic VHO bulbs to using 3 X 50/50 Uri VHO. Thus far I am still in the first month switching out one bulb... but I am almost due for the second bulb switch. My Christmas present from my sister was two more 50/50 bulbs and I should get them this week. So far the corals seem to like it fine.

Speaking of the corals they are doing very, very well. At the suggestion of Aquabucket, I let my tank go dark for a day. The next day the corals were definitely fuller and looked really nice. I'll continue doing this once a month for the next couple of months and report my results, though the state of my corals could be better linked to many other things! ;)

I'm still dosing iodine but on a very occasional basis.. MAYBE once or twice a month. I'll eventually decide my plans for either more consistency or to stop dosing period.

My plans for a chaeto ball in the tank's center has failed. In almost a week the ball disappeared. I think the damsels have torn it apart.. but oh well.. better luck next time I guess.

I am still deciding whether I want the damsels out or will add and pray the new fish stick around. I am still leaning towards getting rid of the damsels and putting in a new fish population. I still like the idea of sticking in a Cherub Angel, six-line wrasse, and a couple other peaceful fish.

I want to stick some moonlights into the tank. I'll prob go with what I did last time years ago.. a cold cathode tube (computer lighting). Though I like the blue better, I'll prob go with a red one unless my research tells me that fish don't care with color you choose between the two.

So I started feeding daily (Form One pellets with selcon) and realized it is a royal pain in the butt to unplug the whisper that contains the carbon. I completely forgot that a couple years ago I bought a plug that has an on/off switch. It works great when I feed the tank, and after a while I simply flip the switch.

I know it looks like a billion wires is powering the tank, but in reality there are only 11. One of these days I am going to put back the cable organizer... one day looooong in the future. ;)
