Electrobes' K.I.S.S. 40Br Thread

 this is turning into the little thread that can't make up it's mind.

Hehe.. like thread like author of thread ;)

that sounds like a good plan re: the skimmer into po4 reactor.

I hope so! I was hoping the package from DrsFosterSmith would show up today. It's like Christmas all over again. :D

Your thread made it to 17 pages quite successfully and I see it going to 50 pages over time:) Here's to your thread:beer:

Thanks Nanook :)

Hmm... I feel like I should have done a build thread myself because I like seeing everyone else's. But alas, my tank is now a year old and through some ups and downs it is now making me happy for the time being because I feel I have it under control. Like you I built a sumpless 40 breeder.

I didn't read this entire thread but I think you and I are pretty similar with our interests my friend. Xbox Live gamertag is JediL1C1OUS.

Electrobes, Welcome home.

Thanks tdukes! :)

Great looking tank!!

Thank you rbaker, if I ever get to your level of tank awesomeness (This includes the "refugium" ;) ) I will be one very happy reefer indeed! Speaking of, if anyone looking here hasn't seen this man's tank, take a look!

notabun - I definitely encourage you to set up a thread about your tank. There aren't that many of us (Sumpless 40Br tanks) around and anytime I can find someone with a tank like mine I read all about it.. hasn't been a time I read someone's thread where I didn't learn something. If anything I'd love to see your set up... post a pic. :)

I like the 360 handle, I'm pretty unoriginal myself... it's the same as here ;)

Well I am happy to report that my stuff has arrived from DrsFosterSmith! I am sad to report that the author of this thread is an idiot as he deleted just about all the pics by accident. Why can't I delete like normal people instead of hitting Shift + Delete :rolleye1:

But alas, I should start showing what I got and what I did with it:

In these pictures you'll see the completed Phosban Reactor (By TLF), the Phosban Extension Kit ( Here ), Polyfilter cut out pad (The white thing at the top), and Black Diamond Carbon (1 cup).

I know it's messy back there.. let's just say the installation of the unit didn't come without it's issues. Things went splash and at the end I won.. sort of ;) I cleaned it up afterwards. Note: Check out your walls by the aquarium... give it a good look. I just came to realize I had water stains upwards of 7 feet away from the tank! :eek1:

So far the unit is running well and the corals have actually been happier.. which is strange to me. It's been a while since I last stuck carbon on the tank (About a month or two) and the chaeto never really did anything for the tank, it just didn't have the time. The shock of adding the carbon and polyfilter either never happened or hasn't happened yet... we'll see.

Since I was doing all that work, I finally decided to stop screwing around and epoxy/glued the loose frags in place. It has been driving me nuts.. the three frags just kept falling thanks to the hermits, but not anymore!

I would show a pic but naturally it was one of the many pics that got deleted. As soon as the lights cut on I'll snap a couple pics to show. :)

In a separate post I figure I would update the tank's issues:

- I have about 3 patches of Bryopsis that have been stubborn. They came in on frag plugs and remain there (Thank goodness). After trying to rip them out, I figured with the temporary lack of filtration they weren't going anywhere. I have been dosing a higher amount of Magnesium (I use Tech M from Kent) and it seems to be killing them (Their leaves are looking terrible). That plus the newly added filtration should finish them off.

- My doser: I use a SP-3000 by Aqua Medic. Over the course of some months I've been having some issues with it keeping suction of the Kalk Water. Every now and then I have to re-prime it by mouth (That ain't fun). I think there is a leak in the tubing.. not of the unit itself (It's brand new) but the tubing going from the Kalk bucket to the doser. The genius I am, I forgot to pick up tubing from Wal-Mart (I don't exactly have LFS in this po-dunk town of mine). Hopefully I'll be able to resolve the issue soon as I'll be going on as mission trip soon.

- Coralline: I fricking give up. There is nothing I can do to promote the growth of coralline on the rocks. Coralline chippings, sustainable/favorable parameters, asking Reef-Santa Claus, or even prayer to the Reef Gods.. nothing has worked. Guess this means the corals need to grow faster. :p

- DI Resin: I bought BRS DI resin for the RO/DI Unit. Like the resins I've used before it, it depletes itself pretty dang quickly considering the incoming city water TDS is 67ppm. Not sure if it's something special in my water or what but I would have thought my DI resin would have lasted longer but then again what do I know? That my TDS is still 0 and I should learn to be happy about that... that's what! ;)

Automatic Feeder: I am going to need one of these since I will be going to a medical mission soon. While people will be coming by to take care of the dogs I don't want to burden with taking care of any parts of the tank.. as to many here in this town (Even doctors) it can just be intimidating as they always hear from me how sensitive the tank is.

I am glad to say that the above issues are minimal and fairy easy to fix. None of these issues really effect the tank much in terms of health.

how old is your ro membrane? have you run tests on it to see what the rejection rate is? i agree the di resin should not exhaust that quickly with only 67 tds incoming.

How long are you going to be gone? I am in Greenwood every day for school. I might could be talked into checking on your tank for you :) No worries I wouldn't let crack rock mess with it :)

Good to see some local folks on here. I'm a HVAC technician for a company in Honea Path. Been at this hobby for going on 5 years now. Good looking tank! The wonderful road of reef addiction.....

Rock on, Michael

There's a lot more of us reefers around here than you would think :)

SBV, have you checked out the Columbia Marine Aquarium Club, or the Palmetto marine aquarium club??

you got some mad surface agitation on that tank dude!

Regarding the water and resin: There are different quality resins and different kinds of TDS, so either or both could be causing you a problem. You could also have a fair amount of CO2 coming in, which rapidly depletes resin. There are ways to degas the incoming water if that in fact is the case.

First thing is to find out exactly what is in your incoming water. City water can have all sorts of stuff added to it like ammonia, phosphates, etc. so a great deal of research should be done to figure out what is coming in. This starts with a call to the water department. Often you can get an honest answer if you take the aquarium approach. Tell them you are trying to grow out rare and sensitive corals, and you need more complete info. about the water supply.

You also have to do your own testing, and even send sampples to labs. Once you have gathered all this info. I would suspect you will see at least one red flag.

Ron, yes I do know about PMAC but don't just don't have the time. Off subject but are you the one I sold my Aqua Medic 250 watt pendants to a few years ago? I remember he was from Laurens.

Rock on, Michael

As far as time, both club only meet once a month. 2 days out of your month for both clubs meetings. :) I bought a used Aqua medic 250w pendant from a guy in Mauldin once upon a time. Off a 29 gallon tank.

The RO Membrane is about 7 months old... and with 67pmm TDS, I highly doubt it's done considering my unit when I was in Florida (TDS was 131ppm) lasted over a year without issue, including the DI resin.

My guess is that J is on the money.. it's prob something being put in the water. I'll have to do some investigation on that.

Heh thanks Ron, but I got a friend familiar with the dogs and tank who is gunna take care of it. My dogs... well one isn't the friendliest around men. I think my wife put ideas into her head.. that or lies ;)

I am a member of both PMAC and CMAC. If you can try to stop by it really is fun. I wouldn't sweat this month's PMAC as it's in a restaurant, but CMAC's housed for a while in member's homes.

Yeah I'll definitely check it out considering my tank is behaving. I never thought about the CO2 issue.

Do you ever see any bubbles in the incoming water? Ever get "air" trapped in the resin or other filters? I am not sure how to test for CO2 but I am pretty sure I have some in my incoming water depending on the season (well water). It came up in a discussion with Scott @ SpectraPure.

sounds like J probably nailed it. no way 7 months would run through a membrane with that tds. good luck with the search man.
