Electrobes' K.I.S.S. 40Br Thread

I did not make it to Scott's. I had to many things to do and not enough time.

I'm in your area 2-3 times a week. So whenever :)

Thanks guys! :)

I am close to needing to replace the lights (I use 3 X VHO bulbs). I currently use 2 X Super Actinics (UV Lighting Co.) and 1 X Aquasun (Also by UV Lighting Co.). I was toying with the idea of changing the bulbs with something like the 454nm bulbs and a 50/50 (Actinic White). What are y'alls thoughts??

Great looking tank! Regarding the bulbs, I am using a 454nm bulb and love the blue color. I would recommend one. If you like blue try the following: Super Actinic, 454, and AquaSun. It will be bluer than your tank now. I think you will find the 454 will give more "pop" to your corals.

BTW, post pictures!!! :eek1:

Thanks guntercb :)

Man I was so considering it when I thought "Aw screw it" and told my sister to order the bulbs (Belated birthday present). Knowing my family's timing on things, she probably forgot it so there may be a chance to get that combo. ;)

On a side note some weird happened to the tank. I did my usual water change on Sunday and in less than 24 hours the intake of the AC500 was covered in a mushy hair algae (Not bryopsis). It was the only spot that had it, but none the less I took it out and cleaned it.

I suspect it may have been my bag of salt. Not because of the brand or anything, but because.. again... of my stupidity. I use a bag of salt, which last me 10 waterchanges, or about 2.5 months per 50G mix. I never shook the bag up to remix the salt... so whatever parts of the salt settled, did so, and I most likely ended up dosing it to the tank in a larger quantity than usual. I hadn't realized that I was nearing the end of the bag... so now it's prob mostly comprised of settled stuff.

Which reminds me... I need new salt! :o

Small update:

- I mentioned my last water change being odd. I decided not to use the rest of the bag of RC (Was almost out anyway), and went to my very local fish store and got what was available... a bag of I.O.

Since water changes is my main source of filtration (I still need to get some chaeto), I test each new bag of salt I buy. My results surprised me: Alk: 13.8 dKH, Cal: 465ppm, Mag: 1425ppm! Talk about weird.

- I have sinned, and sinned bad. While getting my bag of salt, I saw some fish. Out of the blue (No pun here) a smaller than a quarter Regal Tang popped out hoping I had food. The store owner came out and fed it Form One flake, and it was gobbling it up like crazy. I asked how long has she had the fish, it was one month to this day. I bought it.. the lone fish in my tank. :shock1:

Now before you have a conniption I do plan on trading it out when it gets too big for my tank. For now he/she is too cute and considering where it was.. it prob thinks it died and is in heaven.

- After my water change, the tank really looks phenomenal. But I should also mention that my tank just got done with it's 3 day dark period. Three days ago I turned the lights off. One day ago, I turned the actinics on.. and today all lights are back on schedule.

This usually causes the corals to really puff up. I believe in trying to mimic nature and her storms, and I find this habit effective. I really should photograph the 3rd day, when the lights come on! :)

those regals can be naughty little fish. it will lead you on, acting all cute and nice, and then one morning you will get up and find all your zoanthids gone!

If he/she gets near my zooanthids.. there will be fish blood... oh yes... there will be fish blood. :D

when the time comes, take a vid plz

You bet. How else am I going to convince future inhabitants of the consequences of eating any corals in my tank? :D

I am surprised at your IO tests. How big of a batch of salt water did you make and at what S.G.?

Good luck with the Regal.

Hey Gunter, I mixed 5 gallons of IO at 3 full cups of salt. I recently discovered my salinity at 1.021, coded brown :eek1: , and started raising the salinity via water changes. I unfortunately do not know what sg 3 cups of IO would give you in 5G of water. I know 2.5 cups will give you 1.021.

You betcha, I just forgot what reading it gave me when I made the 5G with the 3 cups of IO. I want to say it was 1.026-1.027, but I honestly can't remember.

Well it's nice to finally be back! I am starting a business (Official open date is Sept 15th) and unfortunately it's been eating up all my time till about now. :)

My tank did take a minor hit with my ignoring it. I didn't loose anything, but algae (bryopsis) appeared and hit my tank pretty hard. About three days ago, after finishing stuff up on the business side I rolled up the sleeves and made a project for the day. I ripped every rock out, tooth brushed them, and put'em back. Got the walls cleaned, and the equipment vinegared to heck.

I took out the AC500 (My sump) and replaced it with my Octopus BH-100F that I've had for a while. It's a long story but the skimmer was put away after a couple months using it, because I thought it would be better for my soft corals plus I was going refugium. Well... that didn't work out and back from the dead (something like 4-6 months?) the skimmer came. The heater, ranco probe, etc went into the filter side. The tank looks a ton better, beauitful I dare say, and I really look forward to getting it more coral.

I did, recently, add more fish to my desolate tank. I now have a sixline wrasse (20 bucks), coral beauty (25 bucks... an absolute steal here), Blue Regal (I can already hear the woop woop of tang sirens... the tang's tiny so :p ), and a flame tail blenny.

I apologize for the lame pictures, my friend is on vacation and took the good camera with him.

These are pics from the clean up project:
