Hey Guys and Gals ,
New to this forum. I,ve had an elegance for about going on 4 weeks. Sadly to say have not seen it open up since the 3 day.
It has been pretty much closed to very much swelled up, very little to no tinticles? I'm very much perplexed??? Do'nt know if going to live or die. I'll attach a pic.

If you've had it for four weeks, this is a good sign. The fact that it has been swelling is not. If it were my coral I would reduce the light it receives. This should stop or greatly reduce the swelling. I would extend the coral a little higher out of the sand to insure that the thin layer of tissue that overlaps the skeleton is not coming into contact with the sand. Are the tentacles sticky at all any more?

By the way, Welcome to RC!:)

I'm glad to hear some good news :) Maybe there is still some chance of my elegance recovering. Today I $$ about 20 LB. of LR so that I could provide it some shade although I'm pretty sure its not getting to much light. It sits in my 30GL. bowfront about 15 inches from the surface under 130w pc coralife. Here are some more pics...

Elegance Coral if you have any photos of other Elegance in the same condition I would greatly be thankfull. Have somthing to look at makes a big difference in Knowing what we are talking about...

Thanks guys:thumbsup: just what Iwanted to see . well I really hope mines pulls through. The LFS has one more left (not thinking of getting another) theres is not doing so well also >I think its getting to much light also. there light system was out for a week and it looked like it was doing much better under less light. we will see if mine makes it . I'll keep yall posted. Let me know if you all want more pics...

so why would it do better with no light? I dont own an elegance cause I heard they were "not hardy" but I mean the LFS has some under light and it looks fine.. Why would no light after 1 week look better? I am so lost.. I tht elegance loved light? Or is it that he potentially did light acclimate the lps? I am definately interested in reading more about this from u pros!

Its not that all elegances don't love light, its just the ones that have not adapted to the light. Take for instance an elegance that was taken from very deep waters. They need to be very slowly adjusted to the light so as to not burn them. There's much more theory to this, but this is it in a nutshell. HTH

I agree with caderabit2. We are not saying "no light". It's just that the Elegance coming in from the Indo Pacific are collected from much deeper waters today than they were in the past. They are much more sensitive to light than Elegance corals from Australia or the Elegance we were getting back in the day.

Ten to twenty years ago Elegance corals were doing fine. I got my first one 18 or 19 years ago. These corals could adapt to very bright lights and grew large and fast. Our problems didn't just appear one day. This was a slow process with more and more Elegance corals suffering these effects as time went on. As this took place collectors were finding it harder to find these corals in the shallows and were diving to greater depths to collect them. Today there are very few Elegance corals left in the shallows of the collection areas in the Indo Pacific. Virtually all of the Elegance corals coming out of this region are collect at greater depths. Which is the reason for our problems.

Sweet! Watch those GSP, they are trying to take over my tank. Is the Elegance swelling any more?

hey elegance coral,
my elegance is not swelling any more.. not sure if thats a good sign though.. its also not coming out very much just a little on one side. PLEASE let me know what u think.. I will take more pics if u need.. my gsp is a new addition my friend at work was not haveing much luck with it in his tank so he let me have it I hope he dosent think his getting it back....:uzi:

This is a good sign. Have you noticed any excess slime on the coral, especially in the morning? It will appear as a long thin strand of slime and other nasty stuff running down the center of the coral. If so, it will need to be removed every day for the next few days. Infection is the big threat at this point. Hopefully the damage it received is not to severe and it can heal without getting an infection. You will know soon. I have my fingers crossed.
