elegance coral question...

Well, there is the nightly closing and then there is the closing for multiple days/weeks with mucus production. The second type usually means death.

Well, I added a some fish and it closed up that night, but didn't open up today... I also added a power head for some water movement, hopefully, it'll open up tomorrow..."I'll keep you posted"...

mine has been doing the football puffing thing for a few weeks now, but I have never seen any mucus. No other coral is having issues.

what do you mean by that?...also, how long have you had it?...

it will be three months tomorrow actually, but I watched it at the LFS for about a month prior. I am trying to get a good pic of it, to show what I am describing. It does not appear to be shrinking or degenerating, it just looks strange.

You're the man! I'll do the same so we can learn off eachother..."I always like seeing pictures of other hobbiest tanks," it's cool.

I imagine the football thing is when it inflates itself, that doesn't concern me at all, it's the shrinking for too long that does...:eek2:

Elegance Coral

You say your elegance is not opening? Before it stopped opening was it eating, were you feeding it? If so what and how often? Generally they do contract their tissue at night like an anemone does when it feeds. Depending on the size of the meal it usually reopens within 24 to 48 hrs. Mine seems bigger than it was before I fed it. I feed mine krill or finely chopped shrimp. Usually 3 to 4 times a week. They can be ravonous and should be fed often. They can get huge. As regards waterflow, it should be gentle and not very strong and never direct.

I feed it krill and silver sides once or twice a week, also a sprinkle of frozen cyclo-peeze. I just got it last week, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to normally be.

Right now it's very much like my anemone in it's behavior & diet pattern. I'm just trying to stay ahead of the game and make sure by asking you guys..."I appreciate the feedback."

OK, here it is. This is just the weirdest thing.

It doesn't always look this way, but it definately doesn't extend like it did when I first got it. It used to look like this:

I would be very interested and surprised if that elegance ever looks normal again or even survives. I have had several over the years that eventually did this only to recede and die.
I wonder if we target feed to often.

Bummer. I don't target feed mine, it's outside of my flow pattern so food falls onto it during feeding time. I wonder if I should try relocating it up on my rocks to get more light.

Here's the pathetic look, but it's actually not totally receded...

Here's the fuller normal look, it actually started coming around yesterday...

Just so you know I target feed twice a week & it gets whatever falls into it when I feed the fish or feed the corals as a whole with cyclo-peeze. Once I target fed it, it just blew up and got healthy again, also, it likes random water flow, but not directly or constant..."off one day, on the next for a few hours...etc.

He actuallly looks good, if he stays like that and dosent turn ONE time like the other one posted for around 2 months he should be a keeper.

Thanks for that piece of encouragement and sorry to hear that BIG, hopefully it will recover...:)

thanks benray, we'll see how it goes. It isn't inflated at all during the daytime photoperiod. I am putting a QT together this weekend for it, and I'll keep you posted.

Big, just feed it like an anemone..."I'm telling you." They eat, just because it is a coral doesn't mean they don't eat. they have essentially the same make up as an anemone except they can't move
because they lack feet, but they have more mouths than an anemone.
Just smaller chunks of krill, silver sides and sprinkle the water with frozen cyclo-peeze..."good luck."
