does anyone know anything about an elegance coral? are they hard to keep? i found one and want it but dont want to get it if its not worth it. thanks all for the help

I have heard lots of horror stories and mine was damned to death by a few people on lps forum stating "they have to be on the sand only", "if on the rock they will get a bacteria infection from scrapes of the rock, and die..."""

Well almost a year on my live rock and it's healthy as can be. I may be lucky???

I do know that a mature tank is very important...

Here's a pic, first week I had it. I need to get an updated one:

thanks kyle, i think my tank is mature enough im like you and have heard lots of stories about how hard they are to keep. I just wanted to get some input from the locals. anyone else have some imput or personal experience?

I would think they would be a dozen or more things better to spend $100 on. Kyle may be one of the only people in the club with a living one. Kyle also probably has an expert set-up. The best skimmers, lights ,reactors etc. Certain pet stores sell 1 a week. Do the math. 600 plus brought into OK in the last 3 years and 4 or 5 of them living?
BTW, I have killed one myself.

thanks lazyreefer that the reason i aksed, i dont know anything at all about the elegance coral with an exception of its nice. its going for 80 bucks and is about 6 inches long. i appreciate your imput, i've heard mixed reviews on it and thougth i would ask the fellow okies!! thanks again .

I have been reading a little about propogation and talking to a few people about it. The way I get it is they grow kinda like a frogspawn does and shoots off a "bud" and you can let it grow then cut it off. Hopefully in the future I can get this going!

I am just worried about the tank transfer. Hoping all will go well and nothing will hurt it or anything else for that matter.

Oh and also by splitting the skeleton and slowing seperating it, but I don't know if I will attempt that one :)

Doug does anyone else you know have one?

Actually, I don't. I just figured with 500 plus being sold over the last few years a couple of people got lucky.

Good question though. How many people know of someone keeping one for 1 plus years?

Also, I go to LFS a total of say 10 per year. That's all of them together. 1 store has one all 3 times I go there in that year. And another one say 50% of the time. So I wonder if 500 sold in 3 years in the Comas area is crazy or not? If it is we can throw in the Tulsa area. I bet we are definitely to that number then.

J.D. They used to have like a 50 page thread by Eric Bornman doing a scientific study on elegance. If you have a free 10 hours you might read it.

Kyle. You very well be an expert at raising them. Kind of like Kevin with the clowns. I know you have spent a lot of time and resources on LPS. So perhaps you are in the top 1%.

If we did a poll and did find out that 95% plus of elegance corals shipped to OK do die. Should we ask all stores not to carry them. We could give a "Reef Friendly" certificate to those stores for trying to protect some aspects of the reef.

DISCLAIMER....... I have wholesaled fish and coral on and off for the last 8 years. When you buy $500 in corals and pick them up sometimes the wholesaler sends you whatever they want and charge you to boot. Yep, elegance included. So the above may not be totally up to the LFS.

One last thing. When it was living my elegance was as good looking as any coral that as ever gone into my tanks.

i decided against it thanks. thats the good thing about comas, you can ask questions about corals and such that people have had positive and negative expeeriences about without haveing to have that experience for yourself. i dont guess i needed to spend the money anyway. thanks again!

Now that's a can of worms right there lol. You would wind up including a ton of fish and corals on that list. At least 95% of Mandarin gobies die of starvation. Probably close to that percent of anemonies are sold to inexperienced people without the means to keep them alive. If taken seriously the list would be pretty long.

It is also true that the LFS's don't always get to choose what they get. Thier order is more of a wish list lol. I know some suppliers sell thier corals to the stores by the pound including water. They place an order, and the supplier fills it the best they can, and then just thows in various pieces to cover what they didn't have in stock. I used to be at Bob and Lynn's (the pet place) every week when the order came in, and it was like christmas every time. They never knew what was in the box until they took the pieces out.

I can't comment on the elegance first hand. I only had one, and that was before i could keep damsels alive lol, so that doesn't count.

Thanks Doug! I like the idea about getting them out of stores, but to most stores money is what counts, and also about buying bulk it's hard to get away from it.

JD if you could find a local or something that was taking down their tank or wanted to sell a large one that has been in captivity awhile you may want to do that???

I am also worried about my dang Maroons hosting it. They started a couple of months ago and it isn't opening quite as much.

Here are a couple of new pics its about 12-14" spread out.

i agree with you dugg, there are alot of corals and fish that should be on that list. so far i have kept all fairly easy corals and was thinking about stepping it up but dont want to if im only going to have a 5% chance of survival. Again thats why i like comas and reefcentral so much, its saved me alot of money thus far that i would have just thrown down the drain!!!

dont show me that kyle!!! your going to make me go get it on impulse. im kidding, i dont want to kill anything or waste money at that. by the way NICE TANK!!

Thanks JD! If you feel like you can do it go for it. It's more a chance it will die in the lfs tank than your own JMO.

Did I forget to pm you back? I will have some frags again sooner than later. Fixing to upgrade is keeping me busy planning etc...

same here, im in the process of finally getting stuff in my 180. i seen you had some nice acans a while back and was interested, but no biggie.

What's interesting is that 7 plus years ago ( give or take a year or 2) they used to have good survival rate. Now with all of our advancements etc its done to almost nothing.

Dugg you are right. If we wanted to do something I think we should do 1 thing per year. As for as Mandarin you are right. But I would imagine that 10 plus people in Comas have kept them. Now do the LFS in OK sell 500 or more a year? Probably so.

Also, look at Kyles tank. His live rock is exquisite. Its pure purple. Everything is super healthy looking.

what has happened with them? why are they dieing now and not 10 years ago? if looks are a indicator i think my aquarium is pretty healty also ( little red house to see ) i have had a mandrin for over a year now and its doing great, its really fat and cant keep up with my pod population. I do dose with phyto and zooplankton regularly and cyclopeeze and DT's oyster egss on occasion. all my corals thrive and are growing almost out of my tank but im sure a helthy system is not why they arent living. im sure there is something that i/we dont know about the coral that has made its sucess rate drop. I appreciate and value your imput Doug, i am not going to buy the elegance but would like to know what is going on with our systems for them not to live when they once thrived??? thanks again.

one of the major advancements i've noticed, and could possibly be a factor here, is nutrient exportation. Better skimmers, refugiums, ect ect. I would beleive that water quality nowadays is much better than in previous decades. Maybe they prefer a little more nutrients that we are now removing? Just a thought.
