Elegance coral

Aquarium Imports in B'ham had 2 about 8 months ago. I believe the first sold very quickly. I bought the second for $65 the next day. Very nice piece of coral for the price. Since then, my tank had a cooling malfunction and got up to 82 for a day. The elegance was doing well until then, but slowly melted away in the following weeks... Quite a tricky coral to take care of, but once you get it settled it's not too difficult to keep it healthy.
I know Aquarium Designs used to be able to order them. We had about 5 that came in looking great, and 3 came in looking bad... so it's pretty hit or miss.

Have been considering this for about a year, but can't commit if the only option is online order. Have had more that one poor shipping experience with euphyllia in the past. Would have to see what I was investing in before taking the risk.

From all the information out there, it seems that specimens collected from deep water areas in Bali and Jakarta are easily stressed from lighting changes and temperature fluctuations, increasing susceptibility to bacterial infection. Have also read that Australian varieties are more desirable since they are being collected from shallow areas, and are accustomed to higher lighting levels.

This is one of the most interesting and eye catching corals I have ever seen. Would love to give one a try.

Thanks for the info!
Jim

You're right on. The Australian variety is what you want. Much easier, and I like how they look better, anyway. They like better being horizontal in the sand, than vertical on rocks (how most people seem to place them).
I wouldn't recommend ordering one online, but that's probably your best bet. Waiting for one to show in a LFS is a long shot... At Aquarium Designs we'd get 5-6 a year, max.

good luck with finding one.

try valley tropical fish in Oxford, its quite a drive from b'ham so call em first, I have seen some in there pretty regularly.

Thanks for the tip. Have never been to Valley Tropical before.

I actually live about 20 miles north of you in the Arab area. Would definitely have to call first.

You are in the same boat as I am. (long distance to anywhere in this hobby)

yeah, I go to arab all the time, actually I pass through there quite often on my way to Guntersville Dam. We should get together sometime!!

I was at Valley today. They had one for $60 that looked real good.

I picked up some good deals on four pieces. Worth the drive IMHO.

Managed to make the drive and picked up that elegance two other nice pieces.
She was very nice and it was indeed worth the drive.

Always enjoy meeting new folks in the hobby, just wish I could
find the time to make it to a few of the NARC get togethers. Working in retail has some definite drawbacks.

Oh I know how that is, I work in the food service industry, and the only way I am going to get to go to the narc meeting this month is they are waiting till 3:00 to hold it.

Jim,
Have you ever been to Coral Reef aquatics? They are located in Athens. John has alot of coral and fish. We drive there from Guntersville. They also have a nice store. http://www.coralreefaquatics.com/

Monica

I haven't been there yet. Maybe I will be able to take a day off when he is open and make a trip to see him. Have only read great stuff about him here.

Just take a Saturday off, Mikey will understand

Maybe I can get him to cover for me!:D

deep water and shallow water are avaiable from jakarta, bali but only stores trans ship from those locations would be able to order by choice as they would be listed together at the wholesalers so if you have a store that trans ships there stock you can have the shallow water orderd if not aclimate deep over time with vho or pc to halide

I wonder what happened to the Elegance Coral Project that Eric Borneman started back in 2004 due to the rampant disease problem that were plaguing the elegance corals in the aquarium trade.

Tomoko

I'm not sure Tomoko, but I know Philip had an elegance coral kept in the back of Aquarium Designs when he was there. It was doing excellent until the AC went out for a few days and the tank got around 82 (this was after he left). I was under the impression he was keeping it to study it for the ECP.
Such amazing corals, it's a shame they're so finicky.

Elegance corals was not finicky corals and they were once abundant in the hobby. I understand that some years ago, a disease got established somehow in the aquarium trade and every elegance coral that came through the chain to us got affected. Eric said that the disease exists in the wild population but it is quite rare and he speculated that the disease was in the distribution channel somewhere.
