Elysia Diomedia (lettuce Nudibrach) eggs from MWP

Jason, what color are they? I wouldn't consider it a success until they get to 1/4" or so, that's about the size things start being saleable ;)

I will be SOOOO stoked if you get them to grow up! Getting them to BREED was easy - just keep them happy and make sure you have bryopsis in the tank. The one of my pair continues to get smaller and smaller, turning lighter and lighter, so it's only a matter of time. But hey, you only need TWO as they're simultaneous hermaphrodites...and with that short 1 year lifespan we need all the breeding success we can get - how freakin' cool!

You're absolutely sure they're not flatworms right? ;)

Matt

Matt, they may live longer than a year. My elisia crispata all lived about 18 months.

Matt, been down the flatworm route, these are NOT them. They are pretty much white-ish, with only a hint of a greenish tint. They are between 1/32 and 1/16" right now. Visible, but not really distinguishable as a species yet. My net breeder is very fine 2 ply silk mesh, it will hold rotifers for several hours, sometimes for days.

These guys are oblong, but they are as tall as they are wide, and are starting to get little nubs on their heads like small antennae or eyes starting to grow. They are nowhere else in the tank, and I've never seen these particular creatures in my tank before, the closest thing I could compare them to would be baby berghia nudi's. I might be suprised someday, but I just don't know what the heck else they could be other than the elysia babies.

I'll do my darndest to get some video or pics of them tonight. It will be no small task, but I'll give it my best.

JASON I AM SOOO FREAKIN' STOKED! Would absolutely LOVE to see some pics of what they look like at that size! 1/16" - 25% of the way to "saleable size" already!!! One of the two parents is DEFINITELY slowly on the way out so I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping for your success!

Matt

Me too Matt! If you're still getting viable egg strands, I might want to try another one (shipped differently ;) ) in a closed container so I can be darned sure none got out. I'd also like a cleaner environment so I could more closely track their numbers and growth rate.

I really want to write up some good, cohesive info on rearing them, but with my current setup, there is just no way to track or be completely sure of anything.

I think spreading them around is more important, but if you get a good strand with noone to send it to, PM me and I'd take another.

I'll keep you posted on these guys, this weekend I'll have access to a pathologist freinds microscope, so I'll probably sacrifice one and try to get a definitive ID (and pic) :D

I just wanted to add to this thread before I go off and start my own. My egg strand showed up today (a day late, of course) and they're currently settled into a shallow dish sitting atop a submerged piece of live rock in the tank. I put about half the Bryopsis into a breeder net and the rest into the container. I wasn't feeling very secure with the breeder net, so we'll see how they do.

You go Fred! I'm really glad to hear you are using a closed cup..maybe you can describe what the veligers and larva LOOK like, and then I'll know for sure if I actually have some or not. Little suckers at this stage :D

Good luck, surely at least one or two of us will get some viable adults. Good job distributing the eggs Matt.

No change here, still little greenish-white miniature rice grains crawling around...the bryopsis is definitely dissapearing in a place where it should be growing like crazy.

Good luck Fred, can't wait to read about your progress as well.

Whoda thunk we'd have ever been culturing nuisance algae? :D

I'll have an update on my thread later...hopefully there will be something to report other than "no changes". I've still got lots of stuff packed up, otherwise I'd be all over the container with my little 8X magnifier!

Again, it may be completely irrelevant due to different species, but I had the baby nudis at about 1/4" or maybe slightly more in about 1.5-2 months after introducing the original parents into my old 155. That may give a good time basis for what to expect as far as growth.

Cool to both of you - I'm still waiting for the first baby pics when they actually look like the parents...thatd be SOOOOOO cool :)

Matt

i didnt want to make my own thread so ill hitchhike on this one.

i got my ribbon in friday, as the ups guy was walking to me he dropped and then accidentaly kicked the styro =(

i hope you didnt want it back mwp, it has a hole in the side now =/

i put mine in a net breeder with a piece of lr with bryopsis on it and i think its doing good. pics to come.

Note about Net Breeders!!! With the bryopsis rock in it, my breeder net hangs the outside lip down just under the water level. I kept thinking I had fewer and fewer baby nudi's, but ignored it assuming they were hidden somewhere. Last night, I caught my peppermint shrimp in there...guess what he was eating!

I raised the breeder up so that the top touches the glass, so the peppermint isn't getting any more free meals. I still have quite a few...but I know why the numbers seemed to be decreasing. :( They are getting a better green tint to them now...maybe pics in another week or two.

Keep those reports coming, good or bad. (for the record, I culture aptasia too, for the berghias :D )

Jason

Well, that depends on your definition of progress :D

I still have 100+ crawling around, but they're just not that exciting. The are growing, but it's very slow. Just little greenish specs at this point. i'm assuming eventually they will sprout their true colors, and then I'll post pics and dote on them all the time. Until then, there's just not much to tell.

Jason

I don't know, I let them go in my 100 gallon reef. There are a lot of things crawling around in there so I can't tell what's what.
