Emerald Crab Question

I bought an emerald crab to help get rid of a bubble algae problem I was having. I had a lot of it and the thing has eaten most of the algae in less than 24 hours!!! I really do not want it to eat my mushrooms, other corals, or fish. What do I feed it now? Will it attack any of my other livestock?

I have never known am emerald to eat anything other than the meaty foods or detrius in the corals. I have emeralds in my 90 an they eat whatever i give the fish. They really love mysis, silversides, scallops. They will however crawl all over teh mushrooms and other corals getting trapped things out of it to eat.

Depends on how large they are -- I had one with a carapace about the size of a silver dollar in my 75, about 4-5" across counting legs. He mostly enjoyed eating snails, regularly picking out a nice big turbo shell right in front of me and snapping at hermits trying to get a bite.

I personally don't like crabs at all. I have about 12 left in my 125 only because I didn't feel right about flushing them. As far as the big emerald, RIP snail killer.

I agree, all crabs will take what they can get, if they arent getting enough food they will go to other sources for it being snails, hermits and maybe even small fish, starfish.

I've never fed my two emeralds and I've had no problems with them eating anything they're not supposed to. My hermits take care of eating my snails for me. . .ahh, the great circle of life.

Some do, some don't. If you want to be safe, just give him to a LFS.

Okay, the emerald has not been seen in about 24-36 hours. I am assuming that it is under the rock somewhere. At what point do I dismantle the rock structure to go on a search and find mission? Or do I just leave its carcass in there if it is dead? I hate to dismantle all that rock. That is what I was trying to avoid in the first place.

he may have found a nice supply of food or something. there has been times i would see one of mine for a week. even it is dead somewhere i wouldnt worry about it to much, if you have any type of clean up crew they will take care of it.

I'd agree with that. Even if it's dead, a single emerald crab isn't going to poison a 90g tank. Mine are usually pretty social and don't hide much, but they're also getting to big to fit into most of the crevices.

I had a emerald crab. He tried to eat a small clown that got to close. Got the kids real excited before school. The cleaner shrimp rescued the clown. I would not have believed it if I didn't see it. LFS took the crab for me. Won't get another crab again.

Paintbug was right. The crab showed back up this evening. Apparently it was dining on some under rock delicacies. As a point of clarification, it is in my 29 gallon tank. That will be the grow out tank for the 90 gallon I just set up. Hopefully I can move it to the new tank before it eats something important. I will post pictures of both tanks this week.

I have three emerald grabs in my 90 and they dont harm anything. They just pick at the rocks all day.
