Holy crud can emerald crabs hold onto a piece of rock!

I just watched my emerald pulling polyps off a hammer I'm trying to save, free from the LFS. Poor hammer just turned a corner and the one live head really started opening up.

So that's it, time to grab the tweezers and rehome this dude into the sump. Holy crap was he holding on, so much so I was afraid of damaging him and he ended up getting away. I was surprised at his grip.

The hunt is on. Does anyone have a picture of a trap they used?

Thanks!

Yes they are strong, I grabbed mine with my hand after eating two Royal Gramma's and played holy hell trying to pull it off of the rock it was holding onto. I held it with everything I had trying to pull it off, thought I was going to crush it... NOPE . Finally I got the bastard and to the sump he went. :hammer:

Lol I had a rogue emerald crab once.. He was always ****ed off, snapping at fish as they simply swam by. Caught him trying to attack a nassarius snail and the snail barely made it away. Then I caught him cutting a healthy palythoa even though the tank was well fed.. Trying to get him out sucked, until I got lucky and he went to hide inside a crevice in live rock. Came out with the whole rock.

never ever will I have anything other than small scarlet hermits in a reef tank. Every other crab is a threat. You can overfeed, etc., but once they get the whim to munch on coral, you're SOL until you can trap the smart buggers.

x2 The scarlet hermits are the only ones to get, they don't kill for sport.

Well are you sure its an emerald crab? they're reef safe, shouldn't be picking on corals. Might be a different crab thats not reef safe.
