emerald crabs

are emerald crabs incompatable with anything in a reef?

I am starting to see a bubble algae problem starting and want to deal with it as soon as I can

I have had good luck with emeralds eating bubble algae. I have also never seen a problem with emeralds doing anything bad in the tank.

You may want to do a little research on them.

There are MANY people who have claimed that they were fine when smaller but when they got bigger they caused problems with their fish.

Not personal experience .... just a heads up.

I didn't think you could left your head up Capncapo?? I'm surprized ar your age you even have any muscle control! :D

I've always's had a few emerald crabs and never had an issue, However I've never had a tank up and running longer than 1 year either. :(

Who said I can lift my head?

I have a keyboard that works off of eye movement .... I said EYE, not BOWELL!:D

IF you place any emphasis on what some of the "experts" say then the only crab that is totally reef safe would be the filter feeding crabs. They claim that all other crabs are opportunistic feeders and if they can catch a fish they will.

I have a couple monster Emeralds in my 29g with an electric blue damsel....their claws are very big and they wiped out my valonia problem easily. They grew fast too....so, I am waiting to see if they eat the peppermint shrimp and damsel. I also have a huge sallylightfoot crab. I used to be anti-crab, but now I prefer to have them in the tank because I like watching them.

what all do these things eat?

lightfoots and emeralds. I have always stayed away because I thought they attacked corals.

any eat the algae?

in nature emeralds are pretty herbivorous...most aquarists use them because they're the only thing that eats bubble algae

the idea is that if you have enough live rock and algae (macro and hair algae as well) then they will be fed well enough to leave your stuff alone

however as they get larger it is harder to keep them fed, and as they begin to starve they turn to eating meats like fish and coral

I feed mine shrimp pellets, mysis and silversides. Those foods feed the other hermits and worms living in the rock and sand as well.

I had a few emeralds in my 24 until they died. never really touched my bubble that I saw but it did not spread either. Never touched my fish or my corals. I fed mine strips of Nori and put out a small feeding station for them. They would come and graze. Was really neat. I would get more but I am holding off until I get my new tank up.

Capncapo nailed it!
All crabs are opportunistic feeders(besides the filter feeders) and each crab is hit or miss if they feed on what you want them too. I keep them with out problems.

The sally lightfoot is a great rock cleaner!
Blue leg hermits work good too!
Red leg hermits can be aggressive to other crabs but are great cleaners.
Fighting conchs feed on algae and leave everyone alone.( I saw a red leg crab the other day on my conch and it was like watching a rodeo!)

Wake up late at night and grab a bright flash light and check if there are any predatory(hairy) crabs running around!

For the real wierd get an arrow crab! They are great on bristle worms!(fan worms, too)
