So I was given this fish for free at a local petco because some one brought him in like this. The back of his abdomen forces him to float to the surface. I read up and tried the turn him straight up and massaging the bubble out while submerged and no luck. Fish is in good shape but really stressed. Not sure what else to try. Help!!!!

Were they able to tell you wether he puffed up and never puffed down or if he got like this over time?

I've seen people deflate fish with a needle either right where the swimming bladder is . I don't know wether you want to chance that ....Or if it happened over a long period of time it should be treated like a swimming bladder infection...with antibiotics

The only concrete info I have is that the owner brought him in because his tank was leaking and he was definitely taken out of water. When I brought him home he did puff up during the transfer

I have 3 suggestions, 2 of which may sound crazy, but they have worked for me in the past.
1. If it is an air bubble caught, you could try and burp him. Gently hold on to the base of his tail, and pull it down in the water so that the mouth is up. As long as hes not too stress you can gently tap his back to try and burp (just like a baby). I had to do this with my burr fish before when he would just swallow freeze dried food whole and get air caught inside.

2. Unshelled peas. If the air is too far in to burp out, peas should help him pass gas and get it out the other end.

3. As mentioned above it could have a swim bladder infection, but its hard to tell from the above picture. Could you get a side picture?

Good luck!
