EMERGENCY - HELP!! pump leaking

Came home tonight and found water in the basement. The pump (Sequence Wahoo) is leaking water. It is running (sounds normal and seems to be pushing normal volume). What do I do?

I have unions pre- and post-. Do I take it out of line and see if there is something obvious? Or does this need to be replaced?

Time is, obviously, of the essence...and of course it is already 11 PM.

I would take it out and see if you can see the problem. If it is nothing you can repair tonight, atleast you know whats parts you need. Could probably order them tomorrow from Sequence and as most companies in the saltwater business, they would probably overnight the piece to you. You'd be fixed and up and running by Wednesday. JMO

Do you know exactly where the leak is coming from on the pump? Do you think it's just a plumbing issue or are you for sure it's coming from the pump?

definitely from the pump - water and oil.

I took it out of line and have a battery powered air pump and a sponge filter going in the tank. Inlet and outlet for the pump are clear. Never got a manual - wondering if there was some maintenance that needs to be done on it (though I was told no).

Just my luck to get a bad pump. Seems like my luck in this hobby is bad to awful.....

Ugh... that sucks. I'm assuming you bought the pump used? Make sure you get the heater in the display and keep all your powerheads on, obviously. As long as the tank isn't overstocked you can get away without the skimmer for a day or two. Hope better luck swings your way. Sorry. :(

Actually pump bought new last June so under warranty. Tank is lightly stocked (5 fish plus cleanup crew).
Have the sponge filter pointing so that it breaks the water surface plus the air pump. Will put new batteries in tomorrow just to be safe.
Do I need another powerhead (I have one but cant get it to stay where I need it to)? Does the refugium need one?
Thanks for the heater reminder - forgot about that!

I'd get as much flow as you can going in there, imo. The more the better. If you have another one handy throw it in. If you need to wire tie the darn things do it. Anything to get some circulation. Even an old hang on back would work. Most important. ;)

You might want to do an 'emergency' post on your local reef forum board. I'd bet someone would lend a helpful hand. Might be able to come up with a loaner pump while you get the other one sorted out. ;)

it should be the seals that is leaking, mine did the same thing. call chris at reeflo and they are real fast about it. hope this helps

do you have a # for Chris at Reeflo? do you take the pump apart to get at the seals?

posted locally as well. will go try to get the other ph in there. Thankfully someone reminded me about the heater!

Thanks. Sent an email and will call in the AM. You'd think they wouold give you an extra seal if it is what goes on these.....hope that is all it is.

Well considering this is their mission statement... "We will replace your pump if you encounter a warrantied problem!", then they better help a brutha out. :D

Yea - I'll push - but if it means first sending them this one then my tank is on emergency status an extra day. Would rather avoid that.

That's why I'm hoping a local reefer will be a buddy and loan you a pump. There's a lot of good people on the local forums. Or, at least my local forum, lol.

i bought myself a mag 9.5 as back up and is ready to go in cases like this.....is not worth risking your tank for a $100 dollar piece of eqipment.
