Encrusting Goniopora

so I purchase an encrusting Goniopora (see vendros picture). They told me that he polps didnt extend with the encrusting types

so I have two questions/issues
the first is , thinking about it arent the polps suppose to extend so they can capture food to eat?
the second is the goni looks nothing like this picture so far

There some species that inflate and extend up to 6" and some that top out a 1/4". The flat type tend to extend very little and will exhibit very intense flower colours where as the ball type will have major extension and the colours tend fade as they reach full extension.

so far I have no polp extenstion and the color is rust/brown lol
but ok, I wont expect an inch of polp extenstion

I have many other types of goniopora
this one is an encusting type, the other encrusting reds and greens I have seen do have an inch + polp extention

it is a flat plate type not ball

I've had this coral in the past, never extended much over 1/4" for me. the brown color could be a result of transport and should color up over time.
