Encrusting Star Polyps

Several weeks ago I noticed some finger like things growing out of my live rock. I thought 'this is cool'. I took pictures and placed them here for identification. Someone stated they were star polyps.

I have watched them get larger. The colony is expanding at a pretty fast pace. They appear to be an encrusting type polyp. I see veins of a light purple color forming with little white dots which will be the new polyps. The veins are migrating at a pretty good pace.

Can this encrustation be contained? Will they overrun my tank? Can they be fragged? It is really neat to watch.

Any input out there?

They will eventually overrun your tank ;) Its quite possible to frag them. Simply take a razor blade and peel up their purple matt. It is hard to contain them though, unless you have really aggressive corals which sting them back. The best method is peeling them off the rocks.
