Hello everyone, so finally got my first fish in my QT, wanted a clown but they only had babys... anyhow i got a engineer goby and when i got him home i noticed some redness around his gills and maybe pectoral fin... also noticed some white spots on his face but it looks like maybe scars? also a light patch on his dorsal fin... i am very new to this stuff and not sure what i should be looking for is this stuff normal? i took a video donno how good you can see it but here's the link https://youtu.be/Hi42rvHyYHc . also i was going to buy some cupramine at the LFS when i got him and they talked me out of it... they said these guys are very sensitive to copper and if i use i should only use 1/4th of recommended dose. also i dont have RODI water so i use a declorenater like prime or the stuff flual makes and they said i should not use copper couse of that as well.also noticed the redness when he was still in store bag. ammonia nitrite and nitrate are 0 temp around 76....

I fear he is likely ill, and it may be a combo of a parasite (ich: spots) and a bacterial infection, unless the redness of his gills is irritation because of the ich.

I'd say ich is the more critical issue, and I'd treat it with hyposalinity. Go to the Fish Disease forum and try that. You can lower the salinity quite rapidly: it's raising it that has to go slow.

ouch first fish and its sick... im not good at spoting this stuff.... hey the water i used i declorinated it but how long does the declorinator stay active? cant i just wait a day or 2 and add the cupramine? And if yes can i do normal dosage or was that 1/4th of normal dosage thing they said about gobys accurate?

If your using tap water and just dechlorinating it, your already setting yourself up for headaches and quite possibly a tank crash down the road. As long as its a QT, your fine, but I would buy bottled water either from your local store(those big bottle fillers they have work great), or buy it from your LFS.

Looks like ich and quite possibly a bacterial issue. If it were me and hes only in a QT, I would immediately start TTM, dump the QT, clean with bleach, let it dry for 24 hours, then set it up again. Once you finish TTM and the little guy gets back into the QT, I would treat with 2 rounds of prazipro.

The problem with treated tap, most medicines become ineffective when you treat the water with prime or the likes.

ahh i didnt know that... to be honest i used to use bottled water on my first tank but i have a feeling but cant conferm couse i dont got a chlorine test kit that the water they sell out of those machines filters the chlorine/chloramine out of the water well... i doubt they even change the filters on schedule. so ide prob want to treat the water still even if it was from those machines.

Grr I almost wanna drop some cash on a rodi unit but I'm a bitt tight on cash and not sure if a cheap one is worth it? Especially couse I think my water supplier uses chloramines ima give them a call.....

A ro/di is spendy to buy---but once bought, replacing cylinders is much, much cheaper.
Get a 4 stage filter if you get one. Our sponsors are a good source and they'll tell you how to replace your own when needed.

are those white spots scars on his face or ich? i finally got him to stay still long enough to take a half decent photo? thats the only area of his body i seen them i thought maybe hes been in a few fights and got scratched up ive never had to ID ich before so i donno? and does anyone have a engineer goby? is it normal for them to have redness around gills?

Oh hey guys... just for a Lil update I contacted seachem and they said I could use a declorinator as long as I use a declorinator first and let it sit with a open top for a day before I add the copper.
