Enhanced Biological Phosphate Removal

I decided to google wastewater phosphate removal and came up with the below snipet from wikipedia. Does anyone know whether anyone has tried or considered adapting this technology to aquarium use, and whether this is even feasible?

Well, it'd be complicated to use in the exact form described, since they are using a separate, anoxic tank and removing the bacteria via physical separation. Conceptually, it's fairly similar to dosing carbon or using the various plastic beads. In these two schemes, the bacteria are aerobic and removed by the skimmer.
