enkamat installed in my Euroreef

I finally got to the chance to do the change from the gutter like material to the enkamat, I must start by saying that the installation was a breeze and once I was done the increased performance was visibly better, keeping in mind that the original upgrade was an improvement already.
I am very impressed by this upgrade and I strongly advice anyone that has skimmers using a needle wheel to look into this.

Rogger...do you have any pics of the final look..I would like to see how it came out and would consider doing it... Currently have a ER CS6-2+ and although I am happy with the crap the sedra 5000 pulls there's always room for improvement.

Thanks,

Nick

rogger,
did you add the enkamat to the needle wheel impeller? or was a new impeller created all together?
thanks

I did not take pics while I had the pump apart, I guess I could take some pics later and post them, what do you want to see the actual impeller or the skimmer in action?

I added the enkamat to my needle wheel base, I did had to cut all the needles out with the dremmel and what was left was perfect for me to add the material, in my case i did not have to drill any holes as mine comes with 4 holes already.

Thank you!

how do you fasten the matt to the impeller? does it come w/ bolts or something?
wire ties....Im planning on doing my pump this week
Jess if you need some enkamat I have plenty

i need a needle wheel skimmer first lol. If you buy a needle wheel pump can you change one of the venturi style skimmers to a NW?

Rogger...if you are willing both would be great but a pic of the impeller is a definite plus if you can post it.

Thanks,

Nick

for a first attempt I would try it on my coralife ss ...i think its a nw rio 1400

Rogger, have you measured your airflow before/after? I have a Dwyer meter that I use to keep tabs on my skimmer pumps.

Anyone who has a gate valve on their ER, do you guys run with the gatevalve mostly open or mostly closed? I put my gatevalve on yesterday and it isn't skimming as well now as it was with the ball valve on it before, with the balvalve mostly open and a riser tube in it..

Once I get my skimmer functioning normally, I'll do the meshwheel mod. I'm looking forward to it!

here are some pics of when I did it. U can attach the mesh with cable ties or fishing line.

As i was looking at it, I was gonna say.. Yea. The ER is more of just one pinwheel, where the Octopus has like 2 or 3 of the needlewheels. I think attaching the enkamat should be just as easy on either impeller, except on the ER you've got to shave off the pins and just ziptie the mat to the holes in the base of the pinwheel.

i just did this mod to my sedra 5000 pump on my asm g2 as well. and now my skimmer is kicking butt!

i went ahead and also did the overflow drain mod. what a diference.

i was worried itd be too much bubbles for my skimmer as i swapped out the sedra 3500, and installed a 5000 recirculating as it is.

anotehr option that i think might be better. is to use fishing line to attach the enkamat to the wheel. thats what i used.

i have a crapload of the stuff if anyones interested. im gonna hack up my 3 yard worth, and just try and sell the extra on reefcentral to break even.

Jaimie, how many layers did you used?? i used three and although it looked thick it worked fine, I did noticed that in order to get prime production I had to open the gate valve to lower the the water level, the scum production has more than double, I have been monitoring the frequency in which I have had to empty the cup, is filling up in 1 day, before it use to fill up in 3 to 4 days.
the only isuue I can observed is that the water volume leaving is been replaced by fresh water, in the past it did not made a difference but now it has actually affected the salnity, cause the ATO keeps on adding fresh water
