Enough is enough..getting a 5D

The successor to the 5D is expected to be announced by the end of August. If you do wait the current 5D price should drop some more. Depending on what you want to do I would start with a Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens. Its a great walk around lens.

I'm not a big fan of speculation but with less then 30 days to go I would hold out in case the 5D Mk2 blows away the 5D. At worst case you can get a slash and burn sale price on the 5D if its not a big enough change from the current model. If you have been waiting this long now an extra 30 days shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Just food for thought.

The "new 5D" has been "going to be release" for the last two years. There will be a new one eventually but until it's released I won't hold my breath. Also keep in mind that "announced" doesn't mean available. It was almost 6 months between the announcement of the MKIIIs and their actual availability.

The current 5D is an amazing camera whether a new one is announced or not.

Very true on announcement vs availability. The 5D is on a three year cycle (Per Canon reps) and it was released in August 05. So Its coming up on three years and Hello August 08 :)

If the new 5D Mk2 isn't as impressive or doesn't have anything earth shattering the price of the current 5D will go down regardless to make room for the 5D Mk2.

B&H had it new in box for $2199.00 (with $100 Canon rebate) which is still an amazing price. Sadly it has expired already.

The 5D isn't on any "cycle" because it has never been replaced. There is only the original...that is it.

"The successor to the 5D is expected to be announced by the end of August."
As Beerguy said, i've been reading that "The 5D is expected to be announced by the end of (insert the month you were born in here)" literally for years.
Do I think there will by a 5D announced by the end of August? No Sir. September? I doubt it. October? Ehh getting close to the holidays...October or November would by my guess. But hey, that was my guess last year.

I am looking forward to the new 5D more for the discount on the current 5D than any new feature in particular. The price I am hopeful for is about $1600 for the old 5D.

I'm sure when the new version comes out it will be a major improvement, after all it has been 3 years. Still, I really cannot say whether those improvements will make a huge difference in the photos I take. The huge difference I expect to see will come from me upgrading from a 300D to a 5D of any kind. A possible 4-digit premium going from an original 5D to new 5D is pretty steep on the diminishing returns curve. Heck, that's most of the way to a really nice L lens.

*cough* D3: best of both worlds. Fast and INCREDIBLE in low light/high ISO conditions *cough*

Yeah - but then your pictures would suck. :)

I'm not a huge fan of the really big bodies. I'm sure the D3 and 1Ds are awesome and all, I just can't get over the massive size and weight.

Hi Everyone I just grabbed a 5d and some "L" glass myself. There is a great deal going with Microsoft and there Live.com site and Ebay/Paypal. You can get upto 25% cashback, you do have to wait 60 days. I picked up my very lightly used 5d for $1500 buy it now. then i got $250 back on it so my net was $1250. I did even better on one of the L lens's. I picked up the brand new in the box EF 16-35 MKII for $1210 I used $100 off coupon from ebay they sent out dropped it to $1110 then got $250 back for a net of $860 for a lens I have seen @ like $1500. Good luck and enjoy

and as far as the the 5dMKII goes I figure I will practice and enjoy the 5d for 6 months or a year let the first group of must haves grab the 5dMKII first then after they get the bugs worked out Ill sell my 5d for $1000 or so and grab the new one with the digicIII and live veiw for macro.

Hey Rev, the 5D would be an awesome choice for you and your reef tank photography, as for sports, it is great for that too, just not as many FPS as the 40D.

What sports do you shoot? I do a little here and there....
