ER RS-80 Question

I just purchased the "promo" Euro-reef RS-80. I've had it about 1 week, and I had a few questions.

First- I'm having trouble getting it to produce good foam. I have it set up correctly, but I'm not quite sure how to tune it in. I've been playing with the airline, and the Open-Close setting. Either I have pure water flowing into my collection cup, or the bubbles are too far down the tube, to push the skimmate upward.
Any suggestions on how to better adjust this would be great.

Second- The Sendra pump seems awfully noisy. It sounds like its vibrating. Very loud. I checked and rechecked all of the connections, I have no idea why it would be so loud. It is the loudest equipment on my tank, including my chiller.
Any suggestions here?

I purchased this skimmer to assist in-sump. I have an AquaC Urchin Pro which is havein trouble keeping up these days. Since I have added live stock, and made my sump larger, I bought the ER to help out. So far, it has produced very little gunk or foam, in one week. Actually, less than half an inch in an entire week. I get 2" or better every day from the Urchin Pro.

I am new to owning ER, so I would like to give this a chance, before I make any decisions. Could these problems be because I bought the less expensive "promo" edition?

Thanks, RJ

Hi Rj,

I too bought the demo RS-80 for my tank and it is working very nicely. In all honesty, it requires less adjusting than other skimmers I have owned.

Ok, the first thing that I did was buy a bunch of the rubber potholders at Target and put them under my pumps. That made a difference in noise.

Next, only adjust the airline valve if you are getting too many bubbles (tons of micro-bubbles into main tank is a good sign of this), otherwise leave that all the way open.

The next question is the water level in your sump. Everything that I have read and been told (and my experience as well) is that 6 to 7 inches works the best.

Next, twist the stand pipe to the "open position". See where the line of bubbles is. Now slowly twist the pipe toward the "closed" position. I recommend about an inch at a time and then wait a minute, then repeat if necessary. I have found that if the line of bubbles is just in the bottom part of the neck (above the black part where you twist the collection cup on), the skimmate will be great.

I hope this helps.

Klownfish,

Follow what jimmypx says. The only thing I can add to that has to do with the noise issue. If you contact EuroReef directly they will send a replacement impeller out to you that will solve this issue. Their direct number for customer support is 1-877-439-3876.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jimmy-Thanks, great info, just the advice I was looking for! Your awe-some!

Jeremy-Thank you, I may call ER. I haven't sent the registration in yet, I was trying to decide if I wanted to keep it :) With this help, I think I will.

Jeremy, I wanted to mention that this extra pump in my sump has raised my tank temp 1-3 degrees. This is on a 120 gallon system. Could this tank temp increase be from the bad impeller? I have a chiller on my tank, so NBD, just wonder if this might be a problem with the pump?
