Eric's 100g tank build

lobsterotomy

I'd frag it.
Now that things are finally coming together for my new build, I'll start up a build thread.

This will be my third tank, and my first tank in a long time FW or SW over 20 gallons. It replaces my currently 2 year old 20g nano tank which is overcrowded (too many corals).

Here's the tank it's replacing, and the space it has to go in:

System is to be a mixed, mainly SPS system, with enough live rock to make up an aesthetically pleasing reef structure inspired by reef bommies. Balling light is used as the dosing method.

Final system specs are as follows:

Display tank: 42" x 24" x 24" (100g) Miracles in Glass (Orangeville, Canada) tank, (t)rimless, 3 viewing panes Starphire glass (1/2"), tempered bottom (5/8") with black vinyl on back of tank. Overflow is internal (due to space limitations), and has two 1" drains, and one ¾" return with an angled corner (not the conventional 90 degree corner) to facilitate flow around the overflow.

Lighting: Sfiligoi Stealth 8 x 39w T5HO

Flow: two EcoTech Vortech MP-40wES, one of them on an EcoTech Battery Backup

Skimmer: Royal Exclusiv Bubble King Mini 180 (Gen 1)

Return: ATB Flowstar 1500

Reactors: two Two Little Fishies Phosban 150 reactors running GFO and GAC.

Supplementation: Balling light (with Fauna Marin trace elements) dosed via a GHL Profilux Stand Alone 4-channel doser. Dosing Ca, Alk, Mg (in ~2 gallon containers) and vodka.

Controller: GHL Profilux II plus.

ATO: Tunze Osmolator (in a 10g reservoir).

I've been planning this system for over a year now, and finally I have gathered most of the parts, and have a tank on the way, so I feel now is the right time to start a build thread. I've asked a bunch of questions (mostly in the DIY forum), and it's helped me tremendously with all the planning.

Here's the system (rendered in Sketch-Up):
complete-1.jpg

I will be using a modified Herbie for the overflow (1" main drain on full siphon, 1" emergency drain permanently open), and a ¾" return line split into two locline returns. Here's the plumbing planning:
Plumbingplans-2.jpg

I've added a skimmer section bypass to the main drain so I can use the skimmer section for water changes without taking the whole system offline. The return also runs a manifold with runs the reactors, and maybe a frag tank in the future. The manifold end has a threaded cap on it incase I want to expand it in the future.

Here are my plans for the stand. I'm using 2 x 4's because I don't feel confident in my building abilities to only use ¾" ply for the job. Stand design is based on d2mini's stand.

Since this tank is going in a small condo, I have to contain everything in the stand. This meant making sure everything fit, and could be easily accessible. To make sure everything fit, I planned out the sump first:
Sumpplanning.jpg

Sump was designed to be able to handle the overflow from the display in case of a power failure.

After I had figured out the size of the sump, it was on to laying out the rest of the innards of the stand:

Right now the stand has just been cut out and is laying in pieces in our living room "“ hopefully I can assemble it this week, cut out the overflow plumbing area and electrical outlet area (forgot to this weekend), paint it (inside with white klitz, outside black) and have it ready for next week. I also need to get an electrician in to either change the existing outlet to a 4-outlet box from the current 2 outlet box, or install an entirely new 15A circuit. Also, just waiting on 2 plumbing fittings to arrive (two ¾" ball valves), and I still need to buy 3 bags of reef floor grade sand. Other than that I have everything sitting in a box or in my closet (which is another reason I can't wait to get this up and running!).

And finally, here's a picture from Miracles of the tank (already ready and waiting to be delivered):

Thanks! All the equipment is laid out just after the first pair of pics. The only thing not there is a light in the refugium/soft coral raceway/frag tank area - right now I'm going to use a simple 2x18W T5HO, but when I have more time (maybe over Christmas), I'd like to change it over to an LED fixture.

Pretty nice plan draw-up. I bet it makes things easier when you get to putting it in place. I'll have to show my hubby so he doesn't mess up our 280 build!!! Can't wait to see how this progresses.

Progress!

Got the 2x4 skeleton together - there's no screw strips for the uprights. Instead they're pocket screwed into the top and bottom frames.

Everything is pre-drilled, glued, screwed and clamped together for extra strength. This tank isn't going anywhere - this stand is rock solid :)

This is part of the skinning done already:

I made 2 errors in cutting - some of the trim is 1/4" and 1/2" too long, but that can be fixed with a router later. I'll need to rout out the holes for the plumbing and electrical on the back panel anyways so that's fine.

Also, I forgot to include the thickness of the 1/2" ply topping the bottom 2 x 4 frame. So my sknning is 1/2" short - which means that the bottom glass of the tank will be visible, but oh well. If I really don't like it in the future, I can always add another layer of trim on top.

Hopefully I'll have all the trim done tonight and start filling in nail holes and such, and have it ready for painting tomorrow.

To do list:
1. Finish stand
2. Have 15A circuit installed.
3. Hang lights.
4. Buy substrate.

Time remaining to tank delivery: 3 days.

Subscribed! I look forward to seeing your build progress. What kind of would did you use for the “skinning”? On a side note coming from a very small town the view out your windows caught my eye before your nano.

I went with Birch since our other living area furniture (coffee tabel and bookshelf) are both Birch veneers.

Yeah, the view is nice at night. We're in the middle of the downtown area, 17th floor :)

More progress today - got all the skinning done, now it's filling in all the nail holes with putty and evening everything out (some stuff didn't line up 100%). After that, it's headed to the garage to paint!

I solved the problem of the top edge (my veneer wasn't wide enough at 13/16, and the edge was 1 1/4"). I wasn't sure if it would trun out ok or not, but I used two strips of veneer for each edge. It turned out pretty well I think (much better than the disaster I thought it would be):

Got it all trimmed out, and I have to say, it does look pretty sharp:

Filled in all the screw and nail heads and any gaps with wood filler, so tomorrow morning (if I have time) or evening, I'll sand it down and start the painting/staining.

Tank is being delivered tomorrow, along with the tank I intend to use as a sump. My acrylic stuff should be delivered friday, and so I'm just waiting on some plumbing fittings to come in, and then I have everything I need to get it started :)

Great work, having just done the same I know how hard it can be at times. Looks like a cool view from the balcony too!

Thanks. I think I planned it out so carefully only since I had so much time to do it! Now that it's all coming together it's all happening super fast, but I'm glad I had it pretty carefully planned.

Didn't get much work on the stand tonight. I drilled two 2" holes in each of the back corners of the back of the stand for electrical to pass through into the stands (lighiting and from the MP-40wES), and started on the hole for the overflow plumbing, but couldn't get it cut out before I had to stop for the night.

Here's the full view out the window:

Not much to see, but there's a helicopter pad for The Hospital for Sick Children just up the street, so it comes and goes now and then.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't unwrapped it yet (I won't till it's up on the stand, hopefully next week...or maybe I just might tonight :D), but it looks great from inspections from the inside. Everything looks to be in order.

The second pic is the angled overflow. It looks really great, and should really help flow around the overflow box, with minimal loss of tank space as a result of the larger overflow.

I had a panic moment as I hadn't considered the application of a plastic trim around the bottom of the tank, which makes it 1/8" bigger all around. Luckily I built the stand to be 42 1/8" (in case of any error on my part), and so naturally as a crappy carpenter it ended up being 42 3/16" - leaving me with just enough room. Phew!

Ok, I will unwrap it when I get home again later tonight :P

Great start! You'll love the Herbie......dead silent.

Where is your return coming out? Are you going to drill the acrylic overflow or have it coming over the top?

Keep up the good work!

Very nice tank! Who made it for you?

A local tank maker - Miracles in Glass. I realized after that they forgot to apply the black vinyl backing, so they're sending it to me to stick on myself

Thanks! The return will be coming over the top of the overflow - that's why I got the grey sched 40 PVC, so it can look nice and not glaringly white as it sticks out.

I got the stand stained this weekend. Did two coats of Kliz white for the inside and two coats of black for the outside. Now I'm letting it Ir out in the garage for a few days. In the mean time I'll also work on the doors.

Also picked up 3 bags of reef floor grade aragonite this weekend. Acrylic goods are apparently ready for delivery too :D

Nice looking stand so far! What acrylic stuff are you doing? For the rock?
