Euphyllia long term success with LEDs

literally just switched to the hydra last night over my 29g. been runnin t5s over my tank w/ great success until half the lights decided to quit (not sure if the ballast went out or what) but everything kept flourishing. 8 months ago my Euphyllia frogspawn had 2 heads, it now has 5!!

we'll see how it does under the hydra - read some horror stories of coral acclimation lately and I'm suddenly very hesitant/anxious/nervous about the switch . . . fingers crossed & sendin up some prayers!

Go sloooooow!!! That 29g is what 20" deep? Your eyes will thingk the lighting is dim, but the coral will tell you otherwise. I would mount it high and keep at a low intensity. If it were me, I would pair with your busted light to help with the transition for the next month. GL

LPS grow well under my LEDs. I have the D120 over the euphilla/LPS/zoa section and a phoenix bulb over my SPS. The D120 doesnt seem to have good growth rate with some SPS, excluding the green skimmer, some encrusting montis and some birdsnests. Here's my frogspawn after a 4 couple months, originally two heads. You can see new heads coming in under the other heads. It is a lot larger but I had to take thus during the am hours to show you before they got covered up.

I know this is euphilla but my candy cane started with 5 months ago. It has grown into two frags of this size. Chalices also do well. Your growth could be due to the narrow spectrum of the LEDs you have. Try replacing some with 10000k, 6500k, 4000k and add some UV, 420nm, 440nm to the actinic if you know how to. uploadfromtaptalk1403015945716.jpguploadfromtaptalk1403015957700.jpguploadfromtaptalk1403015977240.jpg

Excuse the color, camera doesn't take pictures well with the actinics on.
Parameters: Ca-450ppm Mg-1390ppm Alk- 8dKH NH3/NO2-0 NO3- 0 to 5ppm PO4-.15 pH- 8.1

hi Mellow,
I have all of the above, torch, frogspawn, pectinia, hammer, elegance, scolys and of course my haddoni. I like the lps because if my nem go for a walk they are easy to move around. I will try and get a picture up. Most have been in the tank 3 years always under the Leds.

Pictures would be great and also which fixture are you using? Thanks:)

Your torches look awesome and I am so jealous. 1.5 years is pretty good proof that they do well under LEDs. Anyone else with an even longer time of success under LEDs?

2 years under DIY royal blue/neutral white and I went from 1 head to 4 on 2 different frogspawn, the last 7 months under Kessil A360we's one went from 4 to 8 and the other to about 13 heads now! They grew some under "gen1" but all my coral seem to love the kessils

Under Led's from the start, I had blue led supplements until 1/2012 then switched over to the sol. It was a month I had it until I went 100% LED with the Sol.

I could swear that overall, the sols did better overall than the hydras that i have now. i'm seriously thinking about switching back.

Thanks for all the input.

I did decide to go with the Hydras and I put 3 of them about 12” off the water. It’s been almost 3 weeks and so far everything looks the same. The frogspawns with a few shrinking heads are still the same size. Well, sometimes I think they are coming out more, but I think it’s just wishful thinking. I started really carefully with only 12% on the whites, UV, and violet and 7% on red/green and 40% on blue. None of my corals had a bad reaction so I’ve now increased up to 20% whites, UV, violet and 55% blues. I have to say the colors definitely look better under these lights although of course it’s hard to know if the corals actually changed color or it’s the lights themselves that give a different tint.

I am feeding them Coral Frenzy once a week and also using less carbon and gfo and trying to let phosphates raise a little.

I've been running the original AI Sol's for about three years now. My euphyllia have done just as well, if not better than under the halides.

Amazing growth!!!

I only have one set of LED's in the center of my tank & I really should have 2, one on each side of the tank. Even w the less ideal LED lighting situation, Ive seen great growth on my Euphyllias, particularly the my hammers. I have one that has gone from one head to about 7-8 in about a year and another that went from 8 heads to about 13-14 in about 4-6 months. My torches have been slower, but have little heads on them aswell.
