euphyllia question

can frogspawn/hammer/grape/torches cross breed? i purchased a new 'frogspawn' the other day, I know different colonies will look/act different but this particular 6 headed frog colony doesn't have nearly as many bumps as my other frogspawn polyp. and my first FS is the same size (one polyp) as all 6 of the others put together, He's Huge!. But after staring at pictures online I can't tell if my newest member is a grape coral or frogspawn, he as maybe 2-3 bumbs per tentical whereas my older polyp is covered with bumbs. Thoughts anyone?

I believe crosses are possible. Possibly even something stranger going on. My certifiable hammer coral, on the side nearly touching the frogspawn, has developed 2 branched tentacles.

Yes, Euphyllia is a wonderfully interesting Genus. They readily fuse together in various ways as well as tolerate their different species' presence and many other interesting things such as Polyp Bailout as a form of reproduction. Here are some valuable links.

Is it possible to 'graft' frogspawns? That article "Coral Fusion and Grafting by Justin Credabel" showed sps corals grafting but he didn't go into any details on euphyllia or branching LPS. But after reading that article I'm sure one or the other of my froggies has got to be some kind of crossbreed. also, do you know what the common name for Euphyllia yaeyamaensis is?

It's not known. Coral propogation, especially grafting and fusion, is still new and in its infancy. I plan on doing various grafting and fusion techniques when I get my Montipora only tank up and running. After all, who wouldn't want a "Travis's Santa Hat" (Red and Green Montipora capricornis) around Christmas Time? :lmao:

For what it's worth, Euphyllia are vary resilient little guys. it would be difficult to cut a polyp in half and have it survive, but if it did, it wouldn't surprise me if it made a successful fusion. The bad part is it might take a skeletal analysis in order to determine if it is a successful fusion.

Oh, and Euphyllia yaeyamaensis is a "Frogspawn" in common tongue.
