Euro-Reef DIY clone.

If i make mine with a 5" Tube 18" tall. Would a Sedra 5000 work or do i need a 9000?

Also would a 3" Inside Diamater neck be to small?

erm 9k would be over kill ,, you only want a 9k if you are doing 7-8 inch

24+ inches in height for the reaction chamber .

check euro reefs specs and stick to that formula . alot of factors as how much water is going through the skimmer etc ( esp if doing the Recirculating mod ) ..

people are not understand that just because you have a 9k means you are going to get better skimate . there is only a few dollar price diff ( i think like 98 bucks compared to 109 from fishsupply for the sedra skimmer pumps. between the 5k and 9k .. ) you really want to decide how tall you are getting of tube etc etc.

you would actually be better off with a 3500 niko.

you think so? You may be right the tube is pretty small...

24 just for the tube? I dident think the real ones were that tall.. hum.. the tube i have is only 18" errrrr

I do have a piece of 6" tube 22" long... its part of my current skimmer but I could use that to make this one... do you think that would be a better route to take?

I guess then I would need a larger pump or would the 3500 still do it?

I tried out my 9000 on my 6" x 20" tube last night and the flow didn't seem too high. You have to remember too that your not getting 900 gph of flow with the air tube hooked up. I will still be getting a bigger tube but maybe not right away. BTW, Uni-seals SUCK, they leak like mad. I quess I'm gonna have to put silicone all around them. I think if you drilled the hole a little smaller than recommended it might help though.

Uni-seals still scare me iv never tried them I still like just drilling a hole taping it and threading in a fitting.. seems safer to me and if your really picky throw some solvent on the fitting and screw it in.. never to leak or come out again :)

I drilled to the recommended size but it fit in real loose. I wonder if the hole being curved has any effect. Oh well I picked up some All-Glass silicone from the LFS today and that should take care of the leak. The big hole chipped a little at the bottom but the chip is not the whole thickness of the acrylic so that shouldn't have affected any thing. next time I use a uni-seal I will cut the holes with my router and make them a little U/S.

I already put silicone on the small hole but I'll try that on the big one. Have you tried the tape on a leaky uni-seal?

Yes, and it worked beautifully. It gives it just a bit more diameter to seal it up. There is def. a learning curve to those things. I have not used one on a small dia. curved surface. I have put them through trash cans with no problems though. The RK2s use a ton of them, and they are getting very popular with many equipment manufacturers.
I think the RK2s use a different brand, though. The Uniseals are tougher than the ones RK2 uses, IMO. I havent used RK2 stuff since about 2001, though...

I think the small dia. curved surface is my problem, thats why I think next time I will cut the hole about 1/8" under the recommended dia..

well i got my 8 inch dia tube in today .. not going todo the uniseals .. instead i ordered one of those Plastic\pvc\abs welding tools from harbor freight .

Niko i was trying to say the Reaction chamber doesnt need to be that high , on the ER models its 12-16 inches tall .

And when you get 1 foot of 8" 10" diameter you will see actually how big it is.

The thread isnt that much hijacked i mean we are talking about DIY recirc skimmers in most cases and trying to rip off euro reef h&s style

Do you have a link to this?

Better order an air filter/water trap for your compressor then, if you don't all ready have one ;)

FWIW, I bought that POS, you get what you pay for thats for sure.

Hi Gresham,
Did it simply not get hot enough? That was my concern when looking at it. I have worked extensively with Laramy and Leister hot gas welders. This one looks like the Laramy I used, but I wondered about its element.
Most stuff at HF is pretty bad. There are several things that are really hard to screw up, like a dead blow hammer:D
