Euroreef cs 6-1 vs. Octopus Nw 150

I know the Euroreef has the bigger name but I'm looking for performance and reliability, and I've heard some good things about the Octopus skimmers.

I'll have about a 100 gallon system including sump with a pretty heavy bioload. I know the ER is rated for 100 gallons and the Octopus is rated for 180.

Which would you use?

Your help is appreciated.

Also saw a used ASM gx1 with recirc and gate valve mod for sale. How does this compare to the other 2 skimmers I mentioned?

I use both ER and Octopus skimmers and they're pretty much the same things with a different label and price tag.

I hear the big difference is the pump used on the skimmers. Is this true?

I prefer the octopus just because it looks nice

Are you planning to use recirculating or just a normal skimmer?

I would go for the Octopus NW150 since it's taller with the same width and less than half the price.

There a lot of posts on the Octopus skimmer pumps running hot. I actually saw the smallest recirculating Octopus skimmer tested against 2 other high end skimmers and just during the overnight vinegar cleaning period, the Octopus skimmer heated in upwards of 94 degrees within the skimmer.

In term of high performance, checkout the new Bubblemaster 160 that will be released within the next 2 weeks.

I'll be going with the non recirculating models. I'm asking specifically Euroreef cs 6-1 vs Octopus NW 150. Both are non recirculating. Reason I'm comparing the 2 is because I was planning on buying the Octopus brand new because it was cheap and seemed to be a decent skimmer, but I found a used ER cs 6-1 for about the same price as a brand new Octo.

I guess the cs 6-1 is an older model, so it's hard to find specs on it.

I have the 6-1 with the Gate Valve mod. Dependable and pulls good. The valve mod is a must for this one.

Try the Lighting and filtration forum and try looking up jimdogg187 he is VERY knowlegable on skimmers and may be able to offer some insight.

I'm sure most skimmers do great with mods, but I like to try and keep things simple. If I can get a good skimmer that works good stock that would be optimal. I think I'm going to try the Octopus. Seems to have bigger chamber than the Euro Reef cs 6-1 so hopefully will handle a higher load.

If I have to do a mod, maybe I'll just try the mesh mod. Anyknow know the name of the mesh that is best to use for this mod agian? I can't remember it, I just know it starts with a K. I think.

nw-200 if you can swing it, owned the 150 and wished i'd stepped up to the 200. al in all octos are nice skimmers

Thats what I thought. The pump itself is close to that cost already...

yeah I saw that too. We all sure are quick on the button haha. I sent him an email last night but he didn't get back to me yet. I'm guessing that's a pretty good skimmer? Woukld have to take my sump apart to fit it tho i'm sure.

Plan on replacing the pump or mesh modding the pump as the old 8 series ER skimmer was one of the worst skimmers produced. Pump was too weak for the skimmer body.

I went with the Octop NW150. It was the most convenient and the price was right for a new skimmer. Hope it does well.
