Hey guys, I got the Euroreef ES53 running I bough tfrom you, I just put 80lbs uncured rock in my tank, and turned the skimmer on leaving the pipe all the way down, about 1 hour later the cup filled with some nasty gunk. Now since i cleaned teh gunk out, its more of a watery gunk, I was curious as to how long I should run the pipe all the way down, and is the fact that its getting watery this time around a problem. Also it seemed like when it first filled up, it was pouring out the holes in the top...does it normally need to be cleaned out daily? Thanks

Hi,

Usually the EuroReef ES5-3 will not overflow like that or come through the holes in the cup. I have this skimmer on my 100 gallon and i only dump the cup about every 4-5 days and clean it. So i would say once or twice a week is more normal.

When a skimmer is new though is doesn't act correctly for the first few days and putting 80 pounds of uncured rock will give it plenty to do. So i think it's just freaking out right now from all that rock. So i would recommend keeping the water level low until it settles down.

I think you'll find less collection each day as the rock is curing, then after a week or two, the rock will be fully cured and you can fine tune the skimmer.

If you find it quits collecting protein go ahead and adjust the pipe, should be safe.

Keep min mind too, each time you put your hands the water can effect a skimmer and any conditioners like stress coat can freak them out.

thanks

jason

Happy 4th!!

Thanks, I have since lowered the water level in my sump. I have about 8 " of water, and the skimmer tube is still lowered all the way, I took off the venturi airline and made sure it was clear. It now seems that I see the bubbles rising in the chamber, but not rising high enuff to overflow into the top skimmate chamber. Is this normal...it seems to rise and then when its about to rise through the top it just falls before it overflows into the skimmate chamber. I know skimmers acan act strange at first, but this doesn't seem right?

Hi,

If the skimmer bubbles are rising right to the top opening of the reaction chamber, then poppping and falling back down, it is EXACTLY where you want it. Keep it there, and over a period of a few days, you will notice skimmate start to form on the inside of the top of the reaction tube, and the more "wet" skimmate flowing into your cup.
