Euthanasia

The approved method in a lab setting is an overdose of fish anethesia, MS 222, aka Finquel. Next best, would be hypothermia via being placed in some water in the freezer.

I've heard this many times through the years but I don't understand how this is less stressful (to the fish) than a club or cleaver to the head.

My guess would be that all body systems shut down at low temps, when club or cleaver may not be totally effective the first time?

The theory is that it's more "humane" due to no pain. It also seems less barbaric, so there is also a human perception issue ;)

Anyone who would prefer to be frozen to death or poisoned compared to being hit over the head is crazy! Why take minutes to do something that can be done in seconds? When you get down to the bottom of it probably the most humane device we could use to send a fish to the other side is two bricks. Or a large rubber mallet has worked well for me.
If you still think the other ways are better then this winter strip down to your skivees and set out in the yard while your wife sprays you with the hose.
Nobody wants to bash a fish over the head but they will not waste a sec when it comes to chopping up a coral!

This may seem really harsh/nasty...but I have a kitchen blender set aside especially for culling/euthanizing fish...a couple cups of tank water and the fish...hit the puree button and all done in a split second...dont have to worry about being effective with a club/brick or cleaver.

OMG the blender. ewww. Yea mine get the last tuberide to the darkside too!. Wow blender, ouch. That is a good way though. Never be able to do it though!

its a proven fact that burning to death, freezing, or drowning (being out of water, in the case of fish) causes a euphoric state of mind for the unlucky individual, i would assume the same for fish. i personally have always thrown said unlucky individual against a hard surface (brick wall) and caused death by quick blunt force trauma

How about taking the fish back to the LFS?

This is a good option when talking about a fish you merely do not want. I am referring to the fish that have no hope.

I've read from an expert that putting a fish in water in the freezer is NOT at all humane, that the freezing particles of water passing across the gills is very bad and is like being choked to death. This expert recommends the use of clove oil (25 drops added to 1 QT of water, well mixed, then added to a container containing the fish. Don't add all at once.)
